OT: Rushed by 2 guys with 9 Millimeters in Peru
So no clue if any of you remember, care or whatever......but I haven't been posting as much because I've been living in Peru.
So, last night got in late with my girl. Got out of the taxi and up to the compound type door (walls are 12 feet around this house, huge gate, heavy metal reinforced door in the gate). Get up to the door and notice two guys appear aroudn teh corner running full speed, one holding a 9 millimeter up by his head the other with his down by his waist. They aren't screaming or anything, just staring at me.
I open the huge door in the gate within a few seconds, when they are just steps away. I throw my girl inside in front of me and jump in and one guy throws his arm in with the gun. I slammed the door (door must weigh 150 pounds +) on the guys arm and he takes it out. BOth of the guys start pushign the door trying to get it open. Adrenaline is insane fellas. I'm no small guy, 6'4" about 210 pounds. But I held both of the guys off pushing as hard as i could with my shoulder and my legs braced on the ground. Pushed harder than I ever had. I locked both deadbolts on the door with them still pushing. My shoulder is killing me.
Long story short, I heard them speed off on a motorcyle once they realized their pushing wasn't budging the door when they heard the deadbolts lock. I understand now how mothers can lift cars off their children.
I have had problems in Manhattan before with simple muggings, but this was different. These guys weren't out to just rob me, but rob/kidnap/likely kill me after they got the loot. I hired two more guards today, one stationed outside with a shotgun, the other in the garage, and one inside.
Crazy stuff. If any of you plan on visiting Peru to visit Macchu Picchu, or honestly anywhere else in South America it's not like the Caribbean. It's dangerous as hell down here. I enjoy the food and the people in general, but the crime here makes the South Bronx look tame.

JESUS.....incredible story, man. Glad to hear you're alright.
This might sound stupid (since I don't know your current situation) but are you going to stay in Peru after what happened?

That's a harrowing story. Glad to hear you and your girlfriend were able to escape. Hope you can avoid the bad guys in the future.

Damn straight...adrenaline is one helluva a hormone. I hope you broke his friggin arm. The Caribbean gets a bad rap like that though. While it's certainly not a safe place, the type of crime is different. I grew up on an island with the highest murder rate in the world at one point, and never been shot at or mugged. It was just a matter of minding your business. I'd say if you ended up dead in Jamaica, 80% of the time it was because you messed with somebody you shouldn't have, you were gay, or were involved in something illegal.

Yeah. Just going to roll around with an armed guard at all times now. I slipped up a bit the past few weeks and paid for it. I go back and forth between New York and here, and scheduled to go back to New York around 10/5. But I'll be back.
Fellas, I can definitely tell you. Delicate, feminine women are great..........but you know you have a keeper when her knees don't shake under pressure. Love my girl even more after this, she's no joke. I've known a lot of women who would have locked up and fell on their knees in that situation.

I hear you JWiz. I grew up mostly in Santo Domingo. Crime didn't really touch you there unless you messed with the wrong people, or got in a beef with someone. Venezuela/Peru/Colombia is a whole different ballgame.
These guys are out to straight up kidnap you, hold you hostage, and kill you. There have been times down here where they hold you in your house and take you around for 4-5 days in taxis forcing you to make ATM withdrawals. After they get just 2000-4000 dollars they shoot you.
In the DR at the most they'd take your cell phone. People I knew get shot in the DR, but it was always personal.......even if it was illicit business.

Is it possible those guys were waiting on you to get back?
Is your girl a local, Induveca?

GIrl's family is from here, she is a grad student from University of Miami. We met in Miami/New York and decided on trying out Peru before getting married. She comes from old money (family owns huge businesses here) . Not one of those online hood rat women if that's what you're getting at. Wasn't a family setup.
Definitely a possibility they were waiting on me, but more like a 10% chance. These kind of robberies are very common here. But I am definitely the biggest target on teh block, literally and figuratively. Only way they could have timed it is if they had someone else following me all night in other places. I think the local street police/guard were in on it since they were suspiciously absent (they walk around blowing whistles all night for "all clear").
Anyways, from now on I go nowhere without my bodyguard down here. And for those of you who may think that sounds a bit snobbish or whatever, it's pretty common here. If you make 30,000 dollars a year here you are considered very rich. I know a woman here who works full time for a makeup company and makes about 4000 dollars a year. An equivalent job in the states would pay 50k.
Just crazy. Figured this was a good offseason post.

Glad you're safe bro.
These types of stories are a reason why when I go to DR, I only go to my mom or dads house, or to a resort for a couple of weeks. Granted the violence isn't as bad there as it is in other places, but in third world countries especially in Latin America, being American isn't exactly the best thing to be, b/c they clearly have this idea that b/c you're from the states, you're automatically rich and have all this wealth at your disposal.

Indu.
Stay safe. I suspect I'd be back on the US pretty damn swift after that, girl too. Do my best to avoid drama nowadays. Girl must be lovely.
Funny that you thought to tell your online basketball nerd pals about it all, day after. Seriously though, glad to know you're well.

Yeah been in denial somewhat all day about it. Pretty much locked up in the house until things die down. Figured why not tell my RealGM pals. I'll come back down here, I just made some mistakes in terms of laying low. Any type of obvious money (obvious money here is not obvious money in US), makes you a target. Tons of desperate people here, I suspect someone I/or my girl made acquaintances with sold us out.
Can't describe the feeling of watching two guys run at you full speed with 9 millimeters in their hand then having to fight for your life. Crazy stuff. Last bit of advice, if you come to visit Peru/South America make damn sure you are in good shape and lifting weights. If I wasn't in good shape I'd probably be dead or kidnapped right now.
Say a prayer that I get out of this city ok, not fun to be targeted by what is pretty much the Peruvian mafia (kidnappings/assaults like these are usually part of a larger operation). Thanks fellas.

Induveca, that's exactly what I was getting at.
I certainly didn't mean to impugn your girl's character at all. My first impression was SOMEBODY knows something about how you're living. Could be a cousin or an aquaintance of the family that's living foul and very envious of what you've got going on. If you had a gathering or a party inside the walls of your compound it's no doubt an associate or a guest that's responsible.
You've come to that conclusion yourself and IMO are real clear in your thinking about getting the hell out of there ASAP.
Stay safe. Get some body armor for you and your girl, just in case, Induveca.

Induveca, maybe those two guys were Terps fans
Seriously though, take-care dude. What are you doing in Peru? I've always wanted to visit, there are some very spiritual places in the mountains there, and they have some great shamans as-well.

Man, that sounds straight out of a movie! Glad you were able to hold them off. I've never been in a situation like that but I wouldn't take any chances, bro. But you already know the terrain so I'm sure you'll be smart.
Also, congrats on having a "ride or die chick". That's a beautiful thing.

That is a wise way to look at it. Smarts and experience should tell you that a robbery/home invasion is premeditated. I'd be gone if that wasn't possible then I'd change some people and places I spend time.
