Can't believe I didn't see anything around here on this...

Washington Wizards owner Abe Pollin says he is ready to dig deeply into his own pocket to win the NBA championship that has eluded him for three decades - even if it means incurring stiff financial penalties by exceeding the league's salary cap for the first time.

"I'm sure [team President] Ernie Grunfeld and his staff will make sure that we take advantage of any potential opportunity that presents itself during the offseason," Mr. Pollin, 85, said in an interview conducted this week via e-mail.

"With that said, I also believe NBA teams need to be financially responsible and the luxury tax is a well-designed penalty/reward system. The penalties are severe. While I will say that I don't want to go over the luxury tax threshold, I also will not rule it out."

This would be great news a couple years ago...but all it means now is keeping the same ole around. Hell, it's his money. Don't give two ***** what he does with it. Take a look at the truly elite teams around the league. Have they greatly exceeded the cap? We are slowly but surely becoming the new New York Knicks. Happy times.

Exceed the salary cap means: resign Haywood early? Keep top draft picks not merely look for salary dump trades? Stalk marquee stars in trade, if not hop into the free agency race?

Abe has said it before, though it weakens Ernie's bargaining position in negotiations with our free agents to be. Point is if a clear uptrade is available he has the green-for-go to push the button. That's not a bad thing. Doesn't mean we'll slurp up all the Zack Randolphs and Jack Squats of the league. Relax. Take a walk. It's the second day of spring, smell that air...

He needs to exceed the cap to resign McGuire. Isn't he a UFA next year? How much will he command considering a butt load of teams will have cap space?

I've told you once, I'll tell you a thousand times, only a WORLD CLASS IDIOT would trade away a top five pick because of the luxury tax. It is not worth going over the cap for some scrub who's going to be your 12th. It is absolutely worth paying the tax for a draft pick, because they're cheap.

Not sure how you missed it. We have been talking about this for a good while now.

This is old news. Not sure we need yet another thread on this.

I think this has been well covered in several threads but I sure it was in the Future Plans thread.

I think we'll trade the pick if its not Griffin. Just watching over the 'top prospects' in the tournament, Blake sticks out like a sore thumb. Trade the pick and a bad contract, and see if you can move down.

What is interesting is that DX has Gerald Henderson as a top 10 pick and Blair as a first round pick.

Throwing money at things never solved anything in sports. It's why the Yankees don't win **** anymore, and why the Knicks have been the laughing stock of the league. This has been a depressing season, and don't see why this is great news. We are following the Knicks blueprint to a tee...right down to the (god forbid) overpaid, overrated, possibly mentally disturbed PG.

can't disagree with you, but still a little money in the right places can go a long ways. especially if it is not your money. It's not gonna get any worse whether we spend money or not. Key is however.....a few key additions will go further with a few key subtractions.
i'd like to see your standpoint on it if we are cashing in on our 50th victory with a dozen games to go...

I dont see how this could possibly be seen as a bad thing, even on this board.

It means we can either:

1] draft Griffin and not have to trade jamison, but rather move him to 6th man, where he would thrive.

2] Trade for Bosh, Dirk, Amare, etc, without having to worry about dumping salary. I really wouldnt be surprised if this means we go after one of them this off season.

3]Be players in FA some year. I conceed this is a long shot, but there will be bargains out there this year and 2011, with so many teams gearing up for 2010.

EG is not Isiah Thomas or George Steinbrenner. He wont simply go after any big name. Like Doc said, you wont see a Zack Randolph type in here. And if there is please call me out. I just dont see it happening.

This is silly. The Wizards are in no way following the Knicks blueprint. The Knicks were bad for a long, long time before they paid any attention to the cap. The stocked up on awful midlevel players and then traded bunches of them for awful max salary players. There's no parallel. You're just being a jerk. And for the Arenas/Marbury comparison... that's just obnoxious.

Yeah, I guess since lots of people here have been complaining about how cheap Abe is, this comes as great news. I still don't like it...and if being concerned about that makes me a jerk Bickerstaff, then consider me the Limbaugh of the Wizboard. I'm not here to win any popularity contest. I don't care how the Knicks went about it, the final result will be shockingly similar. Bunch of overpaid underachievers who'll be the laughing stock of the league. Furthermore, while I certainly don't consider Arenas to be anything close to Starbury...if this little all or nothing strategy fails. That's how it's gonna look. Get real.

That's a bad recipe to couple with one of the NBAs worst defenses in history. Abe is gonna take a chance at something that could be great or EPICALLY bad, and this season is one helluva a precursor. So forgive me if I don't seem overly optimistic.
