Brendan Haywood
has a blog:I’ve been watching a lot of playoff basketball and have been surprised at the big deal that has been made about the “hard” fouls guys have been committing. I think a lot of the fouls that guys have been penalized for have been “regular” fouls that have been blown out of proportion. The new league rules have made things worse in a way. I can understand teams wanting to protect their superstars but things have gone beyond that. .
Back in the days of the Detroit Pistons’ Bad Boys and bruising New York Knicks, hard fouls and intimidation used to discourage players from being so aggressive and attacking the basket. Those days are long gone! Nowadays, you’re going to get ejected, suspended or fined for a “hard” foul. It’s a shame.
A lot of was made about my “hard” foul on LeBron James during our playoff series last year. I still don’t think that was a hard foul and I didn’t have any ill intentions when I did it. But, I think we all know that anytime you touch LeBron James, you’re going to be sent to the showers! You accidentally bump into him and you’re going to be “rub-a-dub-dubbing” in the locker room bathtub! I’m not sure how that foul would have been interpreted this year. Who knows if I would have been suspended a game or not? Each case if different and you never know how the league will react, especially these days.
Funny. Ballsy, he's gonna get tagged next year by refs and fined by Stern. But funny.

Brendan is a funny guy. He's got a career in broadcasting after his NBA gig is over.

^^^ True story...
Probably the most underrated starting center in the league... Even in the videogames... He gets no love at all in NBA 2K9, shares the same rating (75) as Thomas... Uhmm yeah...
Anyway, I truly hope Saunders sees the importance and influence Wood has on our team, and plays him at least 30-33 a night comin season...
He a funny dude indeed...

Nah -- Etan would have had a MUCH better rating because he plays with force.
BTW -- we need someone with some video editing skills to do a video of Etan playing hoop using The Force.

Haywood speaking his mind, when did he become Etan Thomas? Haha, man I can't wait to see this team healthy next year and Haywood under a coach not named Eddie.

Perhaps I'm overrating him, but Haywood is a top 7ish center in the league and a very good fit on this team since he is defensive-minded. Do you all think we will be able to keep and afford him when he expires?

I think top 7 is a bit high, but I've always considered him in the 9-12 range. He's not a superstar to build around, but he takes care of his job very, very well. I'm really hoping he gets to play 32-34 minutes a game this season. I'd love for him to average a double-double so he can shut all the haters up. He is so underrated because he plays just 25-28 minutes a game and doesn't get the PT to accumulate counting stats.

Not only would his "counting stats" increase but just think how much better we, as a team, would be if Haywood got those kind of minutes. Year after year, he proves to be one of our most effective and positive players even in limited minutes. I'm interested to see how Flip will handle Haywood.

I am a haywood fan but you can't count on haywood to get you points in the paint during clutch time when u need a high percentage shot. Haywood is very mechanical and predictable with his post moves. Intelligent yes but not blessed with a one step vertical and coordination after jumping off one foot. He is one the main reasons we have to shoot jumshots or go to arenas during crunchtime. He is the best center on the team and if he can instill in the young bigs of Blatche and McGee to take on heavy swimming...its the best way for bigmen to develop offensive post move coordination...aka TIM Duncan style...then Haywood is worth keeping on the team. .

Well, he played six of the seven final games of this past season. And if you throw out his comeback game (which admittedly was awful), he put up around 11 points, 8 boards, 3 blocks, 2 assists, and a steal on 50%+ shooting per game, along with better interior defense than we'd seen from the rest of the squad all season. Seemed pretty healthy to me.
As for next year, I think we're expecting the typical Haywood we all know and love, only this time, finally with the MPG (31-33 or so) that someone of his ability deserves.

I think you might be overrating him offensively. He's a pretty good defensive center and a great position defender but I don't think that opportunity was the only thing that held him back offensively, there where plenty of times that he got the ball in the post and really couldn't do much with it. I wouldn't expect more than about 10-11 points from him, max, which is fine for me. But I don't think you can get the ball to him in the post to close out games.

Don't know if anyone else caught Comcast's interview with Haywood tonight for his trade reaction but he was estatically positive about the deal, especially about the acquisition of Miller.
What was funny was, he could barely contain his glee about it and then he remembered to send a shout out to Song about he would really be missed by everyone on the team because of his toughness and effort but not a word about missing Etan. Something tells me he was as happy about the poet leaving town as he was about any of the players we picked up.
