RIP to the King of Pop. Tragic but not a huge surprise.
Also, RIP Farrah Fawcett.
(And with Ed McMahon days ago I think deaths like this do happen in threes).

Likely that each (Michael Jackson, Ed MacMahon and Farah Fawcett) deserves their own thread. They were each special in their own way, and meant a lot to different people.
They will all be missed for different reasons. Condolences to each of their families.

Yep, all part of the same soul-group, very fascinating.

Put my favorite MJ clips (including his first moonwalk) in the music thread -- if interested in remembering.
R.I.P. a true icon

Well, three things I remember that I've never heard of from another artist:
A) As I said, they shutdown my school to watch Thriller on big screens when it first came out on MTV.
B) I've never heard of another artist who had to have a lottery for tickets -- like Willie Wonka. You couldn't just buy tickets. You entered a lottery, so that they wouldn't have people sleeping out all over.
C) Towns SHUTDOWN when he came around during Thriller. And I mean everywhere in the world.
Never heard of those things happening with anyone else. Or even close. Not in my lifetime.

Sad. Unless he really was a kid-toucher, in which case, good.

Oh no doubt about Frank. And Elvis. And the Beatles. But, each time the population got larger, while the music and advertising spread to more people/countries. After Michael Jackson, no one has come close to that. They said that everyone in America owned a Thriller album. And obviously, I'm a Beatles nut and no MJ apologist. But, it's the truth.
Now, I haven't cared about Michael Jackson music in many, many a year. But, you gotta admit the guy was probably the greatest showman of the last several decades. With tastes so splintered, it'll take an amazing talent to reach the modern equivalent of the height that guy achieved. I mean, think of everyone you know or meet throughout the day. Can you think of them all owning one album? I mean a modern album. I'm sure most people own the White Album.

this kind of week with what's happened to Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson puts things like a crappy draft for the Wiz in perspective. I'm 22 and MJ was a big deal right from the day I was born. So many great songs and performances. It's just a shame that people are going to remember him in a negative light with the child molestation stuff when the guy did so many great things.
