09-10 WizFans Official Draft Thread

I figured i would start the draft thread for all the draft lovers like myself to begin to discuss prospects.
The season hasn't started yet so as ion years past we can start out by naming guys we are going to be monitoring this year. In the end we will probably sell the pick or use it in a mid-season trade, but that isnt going to stop me from talking about players

. Always one of my favorite threads, even with my high expectations for our current year.
Off the top of my head, 2 guys I will be interested in are Patrick Patterson, PF from kentucky and Craig Brackins, PF from Iowa State.
I expect Patterson will blow up this year, with all the new talent Kentucky has, and Calipairi. He is a tremendous athlete, not just with run-jump combine type numbers, but with explosivness, first step, quick leaping, etc. He also plays with some tenacity. Freakishly long arms, and actually pretty skilled. Combined with good production on some not so talented teams and he is a very intriguing prospect.
Brackins reminds me of a taller Songaila [did i just compare a white guy and a black guy? is that against draft board rules?]. He has a very soft mir-range touch, and can score in the post if the matchup is correct. He has shown the ability to hit threes, though his percentages aren't great. He is a better rebounder than Songaila, and a better athlete, which will help in weak side defense. Has good production and improved throughout his collegiate career.
I know there are other Draft lovers on this board, so have at it!

The guy I have my eye on is a sleeper known as Cash Considerations, or CC for short. I really think he's Ernie's type of guy.

Ha, your almost assuredly right, but we [CCJ, Ruz, Sev, Dat, Doc, etc] like to talk draft! So stay out of here with your common sense, "logic", whatever you wanna call it, its not welcome in this thread! I am much more interested in talking about what future all star we are going to pick. Its not my money!

Apparently, Cash Considerations dunked on Lebron, but the video was confiscated.

I would like to see a draft of air blow up the skirts of the Wizard cheerleaders during a dance routine

I was talking about the draft in last night's chat room. A couple of people pointed out that what we'll probably do is draft a player and then trade him.

Ah, eight games into the season and the Wiz are on the fast track to getting another high lotto pick. Any clue which 'rotational veteren' we'll be trading the top five pick for this year? I mean, the team is clearly in win now mode and should continue to totally screw the future because it was only a little under 2 and 1/2 years ago they were top in the East...

Don't look now, but one of last year's favorites, Evan Turner of Ohio State, has come out of the gate like a house on fire. First game: Triple Double - 14 points, 17 rebounds, 10 assists - and only 2 TOs. Second Game: 24 & 17. He's at 19/17/7 for the two games combined. As many steals as TOs, to go with a 3.5:1 A/TO ratio. Oh, and he's an outstanding defender. And 6'7. Should be a SG in the NBA, so great size. Granted, it's been against Alcorn St and JMU, but those are some nice numbers.
Whoa Nellie, he'd look good in the Wiz backcourt. I really think I'd prefer him to just about anyone in this past draft. Too bad he'll be gone by the time the Wiz pick. (Yes, I'm optimistically hoping they break out of the doldrums and we're NOT looking at another Top 10 pick this year.) (Unless it's via trade)

To answer the original question: Other guys I'm keeping an eye on this year - aside from the usual suspects at the very top of the draft:
Patrick Patterson
Kalin Lucas
Devin Ebanks
Sherron Collins
James Anderson
Luke Harangody

I think there's a fair chance we'll keep the pick this year due to salary cap considerations unless we're able to deal it by combining it with another player, thus clearing cap space that way. We're not a sell it every year kind of team and Ernie likes to take a flier mid first as much as anyone.
We'll probably go BPA, though if we draft by position, we could od worse than to take some kind of a guard.

As a Georgetown fan would love to see Greg Monroe in a Wizards jersey. If the team doesn't make the playoffs its time to trade Butler and Jamison. And we better keep our draft pick. Its time to develop some young talent for the future.

Trevor Booker is a candidate to be a 'CCJ-special'. Overlooked due to underheight, but somehow manages to simply get it done due to outsized effort and ferocity. Good defense despite the undersized frame. Active, scrappy, tough. If past is preview he'll likely be available late, possibly with a high round 2 pick, since he tends to play a low-post game in college, even though he's shown a bit of range to suggest he'll transition okay to an Artest-lite SF. This is your early candidate for a Craig Smith, Carl Landry, Chuck Hayes-type player -- if not Millsapp/Blair. Productive but non-dominant at the next level. He's not a fatty either which weighs against him on the likely-CCJ-favorite scale...
Most of the other guys I like have been mentioned, Evan Turner, Greg Monroe, Craig Brackins, Patterson. I haven't yet really tabbed any players to watch or sifted for sleepers. (Larry Sanders of VCU?). As of right now we've got a late lotto record, so, you know, I'll take a lucky bounce and John Wall if I have my choice.

Oh and let me get this in early: I like General Greivis, I just like the kid, love his passion, fire, feistiness, desire, rebounding, etc.

Wow, lots of bigs on DX's mock. Makes feel a lot more comfortable including McGee in a potential trade for a star. I also wonder if the lack of swingmen projected to go in the first round might actually help Nick Young's trade value?
As for who the Wiz might pick, I wouldn't mind them going PG in this draft. All of our PGs except Gil will be FA's next summer. Drafting a point would give us some nice insurance. I'm not all that familiar with Sharron Collins but he's a senior at a big time program (KS). A little small (5'11) but if he can distribute and be a pesky defender, he'd be a fine backup.

That's unreal - 2 17 rebound games for a player who arguably has point guard skills... and has 3 point range... and great size. Is it too early to say Brandon Roy Part 2? And NBADraft.net has him going only 12th??? They gave him a 7 out of 10 for potential.
Gotta also like the 6'7 guard/forward from Fresno - Paul George; no relation to John Ringo - love those defensive minded players who make 3's. I love Patterson, but 6'8... ah, that hurts and it'll keep him out of the lottery. He doesn't get the credit he deserves for being a great defender. Monroe is the guy I really want to watch - see if he's toughened up - I think not having Summers around is a big addition by subtraction.

I watched most of that first game. Turner had 12 points, 12 boards and 8 assists at halftime!

I wouldn't be so quick to call him an outstanding defender though. He's a good team defender and defensive rebounder, but we really don't know how he can defend the perimeter. He plays exclusively down low in the zone defense. He's probably going to be a bit behind the curve when he hits the NBA and has to play man-to-man defense all the time.
Brandon Roy is a pretty good comparison, though Turner's signature spin move reminds me more of a slightly less explosive Grant Hill.

Evan Turner is definitely one of my favorites as well. He actually reminds me of a young Steve Smith. The size, the complete skillset and his cerebral play should make him a good NBA player if not quite a star since he's not an elite athlete.
The depth in this draft may very well push Turner into the early-mid teens. A great guy for the Wizards to target if they've got a mid 1st rd pick.
