Washington D.C is the worst sports town on Earth.

I mean this. Literally.
Tell me a city with franchises in 4 major sports that has had this kind of two decade run of futility?
The Redskins have been a joke since 1991. 3 playoff appearances in 19 years. 2 playoff wins in 19 years. From one of the most storied organizations in the game (top 10 at worst, maybe top 5).
The Capitals are turning it around now, but remember the Jaromir Jagr years?
Nothing needs to be said about the Wizards.
The Nationals have a glimmer of hope in Strasbourg, but this city has had TWO baseball teams moved because it was such a bad baseball town.
Add in the Terps (haven't been relevant in basketball since 2003, and Friedgen was fools gold yet the AD won't admit it), G-Town (are just now becoming relevant again with JT III), the Virginia teams (all either mediocre or thuggish criminals), and what does this area have?
The good news is that this seems to be more of a nadir, darkness before dawn period. Snyder finally seems to get the whole "football people running football operations" - I still expect him to meddle from time to time (hopefully when he meddles it'll work out like Bud Allen's meddling to save the Titans season by forcing Jeff Fisher to stat Vince Young), but as long as he allows a real organizational structure to grow, it'll be fine. And hopefully Leonsis can save the Wiz like he did the Caps. But right now, there is just nothing good in the D.C. sports scene.

It pretty much is all about the CAPS, but until they can play defense, and stop playing Jose 3orMore, they aren't going to get to the Stanley Cup. But I do have lots of faith though!

Wow, way to leave out the worlds most popular sport "soccer"... D.C. United have been one of the most successful teams in MLS for the past 10 years or so except the last 2

Er, when I said "Earth" I was clearly factoring soccer into my equation. And being the best in a third-tier league doesn't really mean much. Granted, player availability is based on the league you play in. I think D.C. United could be a middle-of-the-pack, or at least middle-low team if they were suddenly dropped into the Premiership. But then, even Premier League 2 > MLS, so yeah.

Hey, the bay area has 6 teams instead of 4, and we got your futility right here. Sure the Sharks are good, but they flail in the playoffs as badly as the Caps do.
But we do have you hammered on the whole weather thing. Take that you swamplanders!

Hah, I thought the same thing so I looked it up here and got a good laugh:
viewtopic.php?f=40&t=860923&start=645G0A is now Wizards2Lottery.
The JohnWall2theWiz screen name will be changed back to the poster's original screen name at some point.

Until a few days ago, one can say the Raiders have been in the Super Bowl this decade. The Niners were obviously great in the 90s. The Giants were in a World Series in that same decade too (let's leave the roids out of the equation). I wouldn't say it's nearly as bad as it is here.

I love to wallow in my own crapulence as much as the next guy, but you can't be the worst sports city on earth with an elite hockey team led by the greatest player in the world (who may well turn out to be one of the best all time).
It really sucks to be a Wizards fan. This much is for sure.
HowEVA....
The man responsible for turning the Caps around is taking over the Wizards. So there's reason for h-h-h-hope. Man, that's a dangerous word to Wiz fans.

the current DCU squad is just as craptacular and overpaid as the skins and wizards at the moment. i dont think they could even stay up in the Championship right now. they fit right into our current wallowing (more than the nats who dont even have a fanbase and instead of overpaid players have oversized profits).
but it's all part of the master plan. dc hasn't had two teams with hope since the '80s (caps and skins). instead we have each team in turn providing us a little hope and excitement. by the time one fails completely another steps into its place and we are all distracted by the new shiny thing. at this point i am anticipating the caps to continue to fail in the playoffs before a rebuild just in time for the skins to be reasonable again (after a breif DCU resurgence) followed by the wizards. there's definitely a cyclical pattern going on.

not so fast, every year a bad team needs that "best prospect to our team in the draft!" guy. I can fill that void.

terps with two final fours, nc and a bowl win
gtown with a ff
gw and gm both with a ff
dc united with a 'chip
wiz with 4 playoff appearances
caps with 5 playoff appearances
skins with 3 playoff games
va tech with 8 10+ wins seasons
all in the last decade
we're in a prolonged lull, but im thinking the case for the worst sports city doesn't hold water.

My mistake, man. You can stay as "JohnWall2theWiz" for as long as you'd like.
I did notice that you were representing "us" over on the trade board.

A part of me as a DC Sports fan died when Sean Taylor was murdered. I've been pretty ambivalent ever since. Every time we are headed in the right direction something absolutely ridiculous happens.

Yeah, that was really hard. On top of sadness for Taylor's family, it made it difficult to believe that, as DC sports fans, we weren't simply star crossed.
It's funny. My wife, who is not from DC, loves me in part BECAUSE I'm such a diehard DC sports fan. It is not that she cares a whiff about sports, she doesn't. It is more that, every year, she watches me generate unbridled enthusiasm and optimism for the Skins and Wizards (terps, hoyas, etc), knowing full well that I know I'm about to have my heart broken. She loves that my loyalty is such that I go on rooting anyway.
I guess she figures that, year after year, if I can continue to be loyal to the Bullets/Wizards/Skins/DC United/Terps/Hoyas etc, I will always be loyal to her.

Well, some of the Terps teams (outside of FB and Men's BB) are quite successful.
Also, you really don't have to travel too far to see the Ravens.

I could never root for a stolen football team...Cleveland fans, pre-letravel, deserved better
