Wiz to sign Alonzo Gee from the Austin Toros

Post#1 » by mnWI » Sun Mar 7, 2010 3:13 am

I don't have a link but I spoke to someone close to Alonzo tonight, who told me Gee would be signing a 10 day contract with the Wizards. He's played 36 games for the Austin Toros in the D-League this season, averaging 21 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.5 spg while shooting 51% from the field and 39% from three.

He's a freakish athlete and a much improved shooter. Great in transition, and can get to the rim pretty easily in the half court. When he gets his feet set his shooting is very good. Has great potential defensively. Needs to work on locking and trailing instead of cheating for angles when defenders run him off screens. Very good at timing passing lanes as well.

Gee still needs some work, but he's a rookie with good upside. When we played him earlier this year, we found out the way to take him out of a game is by completely denying him the ball, and he'll lose interest offensively and it'll mess him up on both ends of the floor. In college he became known as a wildly inconsistent player who would dominate for 10 minutes, and disappear for 20. He has improved in this regard during his time in the D-League, but it will be important for him to carry maximum effort throughout an NBA game where he won't be a top 3 scoring option on the court.

He's a high character guy too. Played summer league with the San Antonio Spurs and was in camp with the Minnesota Timberwolves. I hope you guys can put him to use.

Gee's a good call up if Flip doesn't like what he sees in Mike Harris.

Gee's a young guy and I think might have a legit shot to stick, along with Livingston (who should have 2 more days, and I expect a second 10-day offer).
Tre Johnson is the future of the Wizards.

Not feeling it but we will see.

I would be more happy if we were bringing in more bigs. Another 6-6 guy ? Why ?

I guess Mike Harris didn't impress.

I hope that mnWI is breaking some news here. I guess this means that Mike Harris won't get another 10-day contract.

With MM not shooting and Nick not fitting-in with our current style of ball, I hope that Gee can provide an offensive spark. How about Gee to McGee of the Oops? :-)

Gee is supposed to be really athletic and he finished runner-up in the D-League slam dunk contest. His 180-degree reverse double-clutch was pretty nice.

Dunk #4 he really gets up. Head at the rim.

 Thanks for the scoop. Breaking News on RealGM first
I hope that Gee gets more of an opportunity than Mike Harris did here.

thanks for the info. It seems you know a bit about the D league players. Positionally could you tell us who's worth looking at, in your opinion from pg all the way to the C spot. Also would be interested in hearing your assessment of some of our players, more specifically Andray Blatche, Nick Young, Javale McGee, Thornton, Crittenton as well as Livingston and Foye. what do you think Josh Howards seasons will look like next season?

Anybody know if he`s gonna be in uniform tonight?

His stats look nice, especially his efficient FG%

He can't shoot past 17 feet, great. Good thing we didn't sign somebody over 6-9. We certainly didn't need size, but now we have 10 wings.

Really? He's shooting over 39% from 3 in the d-league so I'm pretty sure he can.

I think it is reasonable to look at SGs and SFs. Livingston seems to be the PG they want to take a look at. Blatche and McGee are young promising guys at PF/C. Singleton is a tweener, but I think he is seen as more of a back-up PF than a SF.

I think the Wizards don't have much confidence in Nick Young. I think Foye is pretty limited. Ross is roster filler. Thornton seems to have promise but lacks a 3 point shot. Mike Miller is 30 and not assertive enough.

Well, we will likely see some Gee tomorrow or the next day.

It's almost like Christmas with all these new players to evaluate.

I would say they are WOW from what I have seen so far. I have already seen enough that I hope he gets another 10 day contract.

The kid is just explosive and can jump out of the gym. Before our very eyes these team has some real leapers in McGee, Gee, Nick, AT and even Singleton get up quickly.

The reverse dunk was sick. And he even nailed a 3 with confidence. It's way early, but seem EG may have found another one. I like the kid so far. Seem tough and all energy. I want to see more. Hopefully Flip finds him some minutes with Livingston and Dray. I want to see what he can do.

Foye is finding himself getting pushed back a notch with increased competition. This is fun to watch.

 Here's to the rest of the season being about auditioning guys for roster spots and developing Blatche and McGee.

Gee reminds me a lot of Rudy Gay. We need a guard that can slash and get to the rim. Hopefully his jumper is decent.

Just play him some good minutes, it's not like our current guard situation doesn't warrant it.

Agreed.

Cant wait to see some ..

Livingston
Gee
AT
Dray
McGee

We may even want to make it easier on McGee and let Dray cover the center. Sadly, Dray is our best PF and Center right now.

Livingston
Gee
AT
McGee
Dray

Or even swapping in MM and Singleton with the right mix against the right team would be interesting. This is a lot of fun to watch. So much better than the stall team we had.

Too many me first players on that team... Gee doesn't pass, AT never passes... McGee can't pass... This is one rare case where I rather have Miller in there for his "selfish unselfishness"...

Oh, and it doesn't help that most seem to have a low bball IQ... Again, Miller might be a better fit b/c of it...

Guys, don't expect anything from Gee. I don't have any problem giving him PT the rest of the season, but there are reasons that he wasn't drafted - he's not very good. He's an athletic 6'6 3 who's deficient in almost skill. He's not in the same universe as Rudy Gay.

Can't wait to see if the kid can produce something tonight.

With Nick and Foye signed the rest of the season and having already received several looks, I wonder if Flip will try to give Gee some meaningful minutes. He may not be a polished player but he brings a ton of energy. When he gets the ball he does something and he does it hard and fast. Those are qualities I think Flip appreciates. He goes hard to the rack and he can jump out of the gym. And he nailed the open look from 3 land.

Flips has played him each of the last three games and he is

24 minutes, 6-10 FG, 1-1 3P, 2-2 FT, 8 boards, Zero Turn Overs.

scoring 2 then 6 then 7 pts.

Hard to see why Flip wouldn't give him more burn with those numbers.
