OT: officiating in the NCAA game

Post#1 » by Americafkya » Tue Apr 9, 2013 4:46 am

I know it belongs on the NCAA forum , but there aren't enough ppl on it + I'm sure this board was watching .

Anyone else think the officiating was atrocious? For both sides IMO . Missing , by my count , 4 blatant shooting fouls ; missing a blatant kickball right in from of the ref; calling a jump ball on one end then callin travel on the other for the same play . The foul call on that clear clean pin block late made my stomach churn . Inconsistent body contact calls . At times around the rim a player would get mauled with no call , but at times some bodying up was called.

The game was great overall but the officiating was terrible . I want them to let them play and play physical , but it has to be consistent . And when a guy goes for a jump shot and gets hacked across the forearm and elbow you have to call it . Late in game , 1v1 down court and a guy gets a pin block all ball , you have to get it right .

I had Louisville in my bracket so I guess all is well, but still thought the game was dampened by the crew

Some missed calls, most crucially on the Trey Burke block but they really let them play in the paint and not one player complained or threw a bitch fest like 99% of NBA stars do. I was impressed by the players.

The players were very controlled about the non calls and I was impressed . I think they are used to and expect no calls and contact . The refs did let them play a lot , but again were inconsistent . They called two shoe fouls that were definitely fouls , but there were at least 6,955 other times that the exact same shoving and bodying was happening and their were no calls .

Part of me wonders if inexperienced or lower level refs ( prob NBA refs too) make a call , then worrying that they are being scrutinized , they invent reasons to make the same call on the other end . No doubt that they want to appear fair , but it sometimes gets carried away . In the instance of the shove fouls , one was blatant and called ....the other not blatant and called . Then it seemed that no shoving was called from there out .

The officiating was horrid, tons of really obvious missed stuff that it looked like they were staring right at and often terrible calls when the did. Some bad stuff both ways but thought Michigan got the worst of it, looked like they were getting jobbed the entire game until they started getting to the line late. Even then all the big crucial calls went against Mich, Hancock not fouling out when he undercut Morgan, the no call strip on GRIII then the call on the Burke block which was a 4 pt swing, the goaltend early, Trey's second foul on a 3 that was a joke, and Behanan bowling over Burke's back causing the out of bounds... There was some physical play inside that wasn't called (good imo), Behanan was beasting, but he was also bulling around. Lousiville the whole game just reached, slapped, and rode the wolverines into the ground. I was pretty impressed by Michigan's poise for most of the game. I give Lousville credit though they made a lot of big plays and played hard and deserved a win, thought Mich played a better game though.

Atleast the players didnt stare down the ref and wave up their hands all the time, Thats the only thing i truly hate in the NBA.

Yes, overall that game was fun to watch, every guy on both teams was playing his ass off. Other than all the damn TV timeouts (which I thought helped kill Mich's momentum in the first half and disrupted the game flow bad) that game was some really exciting well played ball. One of those games were there was a big play almost every other play.

A lot of blown calls in the game, more than youd typically see. Started right away with that blocked that was clearly a goaltending.

Can't believe they didn't call a goaltend on Dieng early in the game on that Hardaway Jr. driving layup. It was beyond obvious along with the Burke block. It's not like it these were tough plays to judge. Basketball officiating 101 wasn't executed. Michigan fought hard but it wasn't enough. Louisville executed down the stretch and bullied Michigan down low.

I actually liked that the game was super physical and they were letting a lot of stuff go, but then they called that block on Burke and that made him come down and take a rushed jumper to try and get back in it.That was such a critical turn of events and just ruined the whole game for me b/c it turned what should have been a tight back and forth game to Michigan playing desperation catch-up basketball.

Agreed. The sequence that led to Michael Carter-Williams fouling out in the Michigan-Syracuse was ridiculous and game changing. Some of the calls in the end of that Louisville-Wichita state game were pretty rough too. Not a great showing for the refs in Atlanta.

I think some of it was helped b/c the refs were bad the whole tourney, so the final was no different!
