Is Gonzaga the most overrated school the past 10 years

Post#1 » by mr.ankle » Mon Mar 24, 2008 4:23 am

Sure they one good decent run 10 . But they did not make it to the final four . But since they are known for bouncing out early . Is there anyone sick of Gonzaga hype around March Madness

Nah, for better or for worse, they've played themselves almost out of the Mid-Major category and have major conference teams scared of them, much like Butler has now done. However, the downside to that is that other mid-major teams will take it to them especially hard, which is why I knew that Davidson game was going to be especially tough for them.

Even though Duke has won once in 00-01, their other outcomes since 99-00, with their seeding in parenthesis:
1st Round Exit - 06-07 (6)
2nd Round Exit - 07-08 (2)
Sweet Sixteen Exit - 99-00 (1), 01-02 (1), 02-03 (3), 04-05 (1), 05-06 (1)
And one Final Four loss in 03-04 (1) where they lost to the Champs, UConn.

Now, I know that's impressive for most schools ... but in all honesty, you'd believe they've reached the Final Four every year for the past 10 years. Great regular season team, but they just haven't performed like expected. With that many #1 seeds, you definitely have to call them overrated, at least come tournament time.

Gonzaga's 10 year run of sustained top 25 caliber excellence coming out of the freaking West Coast Conference is staggering. They don't have the tradition, national exposure, major conference affiliation, instant name recognition, facilities, resources or recruiting budget of, say, a University of Michigan. And yet they've put that legendary institution to shame over the past decade when it comes to mens college basketball. Hell, Gonzaga's even produced a National player of the year. I don't see another true mid major matching that type of long term success anytime soon. 3 straight Sweet 16's, 4 in all. An Elite 8 berth, earning #2 and #3 seeds right along with the big boys. And of course we take for granted the mere fact that they've made 10 straight tournament appearances. What that program has accomplished out in Spokane is nothing short of amazing.

Gonzaga went from no name school to no longer a mid major in 10 years. Nothing overrated about that.

What hype are you referring to? I don't recall much of anything on CBS or ESPN about Gonzaga leading up to the tournament. Last year, there wasn't much said about them either. With Morrison, they did have the hype but that was warranted, as they should've made the final 4, but choked that game away against UCLA.

Gonzaga has underperformed according to its seed for the last 5 years or so. Does that make them overrated? Hardly. The fact that a mid-major has put themselves in a position to get a high seed year after year, and "Fail", is quite a feat in itself.

Gonzaga, Memphis and Xavier are the only non BCS schools to be able to conistently recruit top 100 players, and those two other schools have more of a tradition to build upon.

They have been a bit unlucky too. They have actually played really well during the tourny but have been unfortunate in their opponents have matched them a couple of times. And they pretty much choked away a chance to go far the year they lost to UCLA.

I agree....

Duke is the most overrated program in my opinion... the media keeps busting a nut before, during and after the season with Duke.
