Syracuse board sanctions Devendorf

Post#1 » by BassMaster » Thu Dec 11, 2008 4:38 am

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A Syracuse University judicial hearing board has ruled that starting guard Eric Devendorf violated the Student Code of Conduct after allegedly hitting a female student in the face.

The board recommended that Devendorf, a 6-foot-4 junior, be suspended for the remainder of the academic year.

The biggest problem at SU as in many other major sports schools is that too many times the star basketball player or football player is let off with a slap on the wrist. The local DA here won't even touch them as well.
So we shall all see if SU finally has the balls and says goodbye to this player.

So Jim Boeheim should support one of his players getting suspended for the entire year because of an episode of verbal harassment? Do you think any other student would get kicked out for the same, especially when provoked?

I don't know if Eric Devendorf punched her... if he did, or the review board, decided he did, then yes, I'm all for automatic expulsion.

However, the review board found there was no physical harm committed, but there was harassment (A COP-OUT Conclusion)... then decided he should be suspended for the entire year.

Punishment must fit the "crime" one is charged with. This is not the case here.

While the JRB suspects Devo may have punched her, (there is no phyiscal evidence, no criminal charges, no witnesses other than those who support otherwise, only her word). All there is both parties agreeing to verbal harassment.

The Board clearly and explicitely decided that Devendorf hit her in the face.

It is not just verbal - the finding was one of physical striking of a female student. There was no injury to the victim, however, so it did not amount to "physical harm" as the board interpreted the standard.

The Board also expressly noted in explaining its suspension that Devendorf was already on probation for causing physical harm to another student so this is a repeat offender in their eyes.

Boeheim is allowing him to play while he is appealing the suspension.

This is what I had read earlier and send to a friend - it was the basis for my argument. I misinterpreted the physical harm aspect of it - your article goes into further detail.

FROM ESPN

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim says the suspension given to starting guard Eric Devendorf by a university judicial board is too severe.

The board recommended Wednesday that Devendorf be suspended for the remainder of the academic year after allegedly hitting a female student in the face. He is appealing the decision.

Boeheim also took exception with the Judicial Review Board's characterization that testimony given at a hearing by three basketball players was biased because they are Devendorf's teammates.

The board found Devendorf had violated codes of conduct that included harassment, but it cleared him of causing physical harm to a female student on Nov. 1.

Devendorf is the third-leading scorer for the Orange (No. 16 ESPN/USA Today, No, 13 AP), averaging 14.1 points

Eric completes his community service and should be back in the lineup on Tuesday as the Cuse take on Setan Hall.

Would you mind showing any evidence for your claims in the link you provided. I should have looked at this a while ago.

I don't see the JRB making any of the bolded claims you have suggested they did.

I was waiting for the Free Devendorf tshirts. Didn't happen.
