Is NCAA Basketball more exciting than NBA Basketball?

Post#1 » by Storm Surge » Fri Mar 20, 2009 6:46 pm

There are no superstar calls, players get treated equally.

None of that BS continuation that allows players to take 5 steps after the foul and have it still count.

Possession arrow which is better because jump balls are terrible.

1 and 1 rule which makes games closer overall.

the NBA game is actually softer than the college game due to touch fouls on the perimeter which turn games into FT contests.

Less isolation, more team oriented basketball.

It seems the kids actually care about winning rather than professionals who couldn't care less about the outcome as long as they get their million dollar paychecks.

I think the single-elimination aspect makes it pretty exciting, but to me..nothing is better than watching the best players in the world go to work and do what they do.

I like college basketball I hate the 35 second shot clock. Seeing teams standing over 30 feet away from the basket for the 1st 10-15 seconds of the possession is pretty boring.

We have this argument every year..for me, NBA ball is so much better its not even funny

The talent pool is just so much better. I love watching Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade surgically pick apart a defense as opposed to Tyler Hansbrough flailing around in the paint. Offensive and defensive execution is so much better, the athletes are better, coaching is better, the non-use of excessive zones allow the game to be flow more freely.

The atmosphere incollege games are better granted, but for a guy like me who just wants to focus on the game at hand, i dont see how anyone can say the quality of basketball is better at NCAA level. Basically, it comes down to this:

Dwight Howard or Hansborough
Kobe or Stephen Curry
Chris Paul or Darren Collison

you choose

Plus: The crowds are insane and make NBA playoff crowds look absolutely pathetic, nevermind regular season. They're a little scary actually.

Minus: It seems like everything is either a three or a dunk. And the offense takes forever and a half to set up.

It's all about the bracket, everyone fills one out now.

Transform the NBA postseason into a bracket system and you'll see how high ratings and what not improve.

People love brackets.

I can't stand watching NCAA basketball. It's just too boring to me. I don't get the obsession over it.

I personally enjoy the NCAA Tournament more than the NBA playoffs (except for when the Magic are playing). But that's mainly because of the fun of filling out a bracket and rooting for the teams I picked.

Other than that, I follow the NBA much, much more closely.

(I think a lot of people fall into this category.)

This. This. A thousand times this.

35 second shot clock is ridiculous. 3-point line is far too close. There is no real offensive execution. For the majority of college basketball teams, its throw the ball around for 25 seconds and throw up a 3. Incredibly boring to watch for myself personally.

QFT.

I'd only watch NCAA basketball to watch the NBA prospects dominate their crappy competition.

Never understood the nostalgia and innocence associated with amateur sports. We know that's not really the case (these guys are getting paid, just under the table), and the quality of play and players is not even close.

Would you watch pickup games at the Y if the players at the Y cared about the game more than NBA players? I think not.

This is the truth. The coaches are quite poor in College. In college you can run the same zone every possession, while in pros you have to constantly change it up or else teams will break it down.

Also its absolute bull that people think NBA players don't play as hard as college players. NBA players work much harder on their games on average than college players.

is a hamburger better than a premium steak?

I'll take the skill and substance over the hoopla and the running around like chickens with their heads chopped off.

I've always preferred to watch the most talented players play on the same stage (ie: the NBA), but I don't think there is any doubt that college kids have about 1000X's more passion and actually play for the love of game rather than the love of a paycheck.

So the players are pumped up, the crowds are always great and enthusiastic, etc. All in all, I'd agree that it's more exciting, but I still prefer the NBA.

Now post the question on a college board and get back to us. I'm sure they'd type the mirror stereotypes.

I easily prefer watching college and high school over the NBA. I love the team game, not the one on one. But probably because I coach basketball, and love the sport for it's strategy, not for dunks and show-boating.

No offense, but if you truly believe that the strategies used in high school ball is better than ones used in the NBA then you must be a lousy coach. NBA brand basketball is just better basketball. It's better coached, has better athletes, better skill level, better defense/offense... the list just goes on and on.

I can understand why some people would prefer to watch the NCAA tournament though since all games are single elimination which makes it very exciting. The players have to give it 100% each game or risk going home. But high school??? c'mon now be honest.
