UConn needs it's own thread

Post#1 » by TheBoondocks » Fri Mar 27, 2009 4:12 am

Absolutely beasted their way to the Elite Eight. When Thabeet does what he did against Purdue, Dyson or no Dyson, no one can stop them. Robinson is a freak of nature, and Price is playing like a man possessed, even on his off shooting nights. No one has given them the credit they deserve for being THE most convincing and unequivocal no. 1 seed in this tourney. Anyone think people underestimated them and, if so, have changed their minds about UConn?

I think Nova has impressed me more their past two games, clobbering UCLA and Duke.

The thing about the NCAA tournament is, no matter how you dominate the competition, one poor showing and you're headed home. I think the fact that Memphis lost might actually hurt UConn. They match up better with Memphis (expect Mizzou to give them some fits with the press.... less ballhandling and depth without Dyson). Plus I think they'd be more enthusiastic against Memphis due to all the "experts" picking Memphis in their Final Four.

Anyway should be a good regional final.

I was so stunned by all the Memphis #1 seed talk. UConn has been a dominant team all season and that's continued right into the tourny. But right now no team is playing better than Villanova. They're winning games in the first 10 minutes of action (see UCLA and Duke). This is the toughest, most physical Villanova basketball team I've seen in at least 20 years. Don't look now, but with 3 Big East teams already in the Elite 8 and Louisville and Syracuse still alive we could honestly see an All Big East Final 4. Take that 1985 Final 4.

Well, we're guaranteed to have at least 1 Big East team now. It wouldn't surprise me to see Nova topple Pittsburgh on Saturday. Even though they have no one who can really handle Blair, they've been so hot (and Pitt so shaky) it should be a good game.

Syracuse (obviously) is the longshot. Getting through Oklahoma and (possibly) UNC in one weekend would be an impressive feat indeed.

UConn looks awesome, but just imagine how good Pitt, UNC, and Louisville would look if they cheated in recruiting as well.

I assumed that was what this thread would be about.

That's a complete joke imo. It is all speculation up to this point whether or not Calhoun and the rest of the staff were involved with this rogue guy. He extorted one million from Rip Hamilton in the past (when he was his agent) and is generally viewed as a scumbag. I doubt they will have a tangible link between him and Calhoun. (ordering him to do any of this) Anyway, the phone call rule may have been violated. But, that is a lot of BS anyway. Why does the NCAA restrict phone calls? If a team calls too much, this usually means that they are really interested. And there must be a careful balance because otherwise, the recruit might be turned off if he is receiving constant messages.

^ jman, I completely agree and it stuns me how much the media has blown this up. It seems like a big non-story to me, from a source who is vindictive and trying to disturb to men's basketball team at the most important time in the season. I've read far more damning stories about violations from teams that never even get close to this much press (and are sometimes punished with just a slap on the wrist).

The only real issue is the calls, which is obviously a violation. If there's a sanction, I don't expect it to be more than a scholarship over a season or two.
