SOUL's 2016 Mock Draft

Post#1 » by SOUL » Sat Jun 18, 2016 1:52 pm

http://thedoublescreen.com/words/2016-mock-draft-odyssey

I uploaded it on my personal website, it's GIF heavy and has a lot of writing if you want some content.

Mostly just for fun and where I think players would best fit, not exactly where I expect all of them to go but fun nonetheless.

I like the choices for the Celtics. If Ainge manages to pull this off (I would prefer trading Bradley over Smart with the 16th though), I'd be pretty happy.

This is tremendous. Nice job! I rarely read a full mock draft with commentary but this one really caught my eye.

Sabonis would be okay for the Pistons. Their need for a big man is more defensive than offensive but he's a nice prospect. Domantas' value to Detroit probably wouldn't be as a stretch four though, which isn't much of a need when both Harris and Morris can play the role effectively. It's as a stretch five that's becoming more and more popular around the league. I think he would play both spots down the line as a "big" power forward and also become the main backup at center if/when Baynes opts out after the 2016-17 season.

Explain? Instead of just writing a snarky comment. Like I said, I think you guys have a wealth of talent at the center and PF positions with a few trade chips there as well. Where do you think the Nuggets will go with the picks?

Thank you, means a lot! Yeah, realistically he could be in both big and small lineups if he were to become that player (which will remain to be seen) but you have a good point there. I'm kinda iffy on Harris being able to play that role being an Orlando fan and watching him for a while, but it's not a pressing need or anything. I'm just sort of envisioning SVG still trying to capture his Orlando glory years and grabbing those types of players that he feels comfortable with. I like the dynamic that Morris and Harris have when they play together though.

Well, why do you have us trading back for a C/PF in Maker then ?? Most see him as a 2nd rounder and a bit of a risk, which I do as well. Also, the trade for 15 for just a future 2nd ?? Two years ago DEN traded 11 for 16 & 19....seems to me going from 21 to 15 deserves more than a future 2nd, especially when that 2nd comes from a playoff team, doesn't seem like it'll be more than a mid-range 2nd, not good or realistic value to that trade. We have good depth at C (another reason Thon isn't a good choice) , we can always use a PF that would can be a rim protector (something Faried or Jokic isn't) , oh someone like Davis...hmmm. If you're going to trade any pick, it's probably #19, either that or use for a draft-n-stash (Zubac ?) as we don't need/want THREE more rookies as we already have 3 starters under the age of 21, the GM has already gone on record as saying as much.

True I had trouble thinking of fair value but I think a late first/early second would be good enough for this draft.

It's the third pick as well though, and for that fact alone (having 3 picks) I think you can gamble with him after selecting two guards. The reason being that he doesn't have to play at all and can learn behind people for a few years/D-League it and then if it doesn't work out with Gallo, Faried, Nurkic, etc, you have a player that has pretty high upside. It's entirely dependent on what you think his ceiling is. But if I had three draft picks I'd snatch him up with the third after taking a few safe bets in Hield and Jackson. That's just my line of thinking.

But DEN isn't a market that CAN gamble, we're not a FA magnet with NBA players so we have to hit. Maker is too big of a risk/reward to gamble on without a way to cover that. I don't see DEN making that especially when their need is more in the back court.

As for your struggle with the value, we're talking a pick just outside the lottery, I could see a late 1st, but look where ATL's 2nd this year is going to be , early 50's ...is next year's going to just into the 30's, even 40's ???? Probably not. I guess they do have 2017 BKN 2nd that may work, but not for a future ATL's 2nd.

Damn this is solid. Looked at every pick and thought, yeah, I can see this.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy
