RTM Mock Draft Thread (6/22, Top 40)

Post#1 » by RTM » Tue Apr 12, 2011 8:01 pm

Well, the NCAA tourney has ending and the NBA regular season is coming to an end. It's the time of year where I take great interest in the NBA draft (especially in recent years with my Pistons being a lotto team) and come up with the best mocks I can. Here's my first 1st round mock:

1. Minnesota Timberwolves - Kyrie Irving (6'2" PG, Duke, Fr.)
2. Cleveland Cavaliers - Derrick Williams (6'9'' F, Arizona, So.)

14. Houston Rockets - Markieff Morries (6'10" PF/C, Kansas, Jr.)
15. Indiana Pacers - Donatas Motiejunas (7'0" PF, Lithuania)
16. Philadelphia 76ers - Tristan Thompson (6'9" PF, Texas, Fr.)
17. New York Knicks - Kenneth Faried (6'8" PF, Morehead State, Sr.)

I really hope Joe Dumars doesn't fall into the Biyombo trap

^ I'm betting that, if we stay put, he'll fall in love with the offense/leadership of Kemba, the size/length/athleticism of Knight, or the defensive potential of Biyombo.

I can't imagine Joe passing on a guy he thinks could be another Ben Wallace. He's already fallen in love with one undersized scorer after an insane run (Ben Gordon) and another big PG with great athletic potential (Stuckey), so I decided to go with option #3 here.

Then again, I could see that all being moot if Kanter is available at 7. I'm just not sure he will be.

This may just be my opinion, but if I was picking for Hou at 23, I'd take Singleton from Florida State. Couldn't hurt picking up the best defender in the NCAA and hoping he helps improve our defense.

RTM, do not allow WhiteShaggy to make that pick for Houston. Singleton should be a notSonic. You've already published your mock. No take backs!
notSonics 2016
Starters - Trey, Roberson, KD, Ibaka, Adams
Rotation - Payne, Waiters, Green, McGary, Kanter
Bench - Collison, Christon, Brodgon, Huestis

LOL the way I see it, we don't have anything set in stone at SF. Budinger is good but he doesn't play enough defense. If this scenario played out and we passed on Singleton, smh.

5/9 Update (using ESPN's trade machine order and with some explanation):

1. Cleveland Cavaliers - Derrick Williams (6'9'' F, Arizona, So.)
2. Sacramento Kings - Kyrie Irving (6'2" PG, Duke, Fr.)
3. Toronto Raptors - Enes Kanter (6'11" PF/C, Turkey)

Enes can be the traditional, back the the basket guy Toronto seems to want next to Bargnani. They have enough athleticism in the front court (Davis and Johnson) to pair nicely with him.

4. Minnesota Timberwolves - Brandon Knight (6'3" PG, Kentucky, Fr.)

Minny had the idea to pair Rubio and Flynn in a 2 PG back court. It obviously won't/can't happen like they wanted. With Flynn seeming to be on the way out, Knight gives Minny a combo who could become (in some respects) a bit like Eric Gordon, with some ability to run the offense. There isgreat potential to pair with him with Rubio for the back court Kahn had envisioned. That aside, he's 2nd best PG prospect in the draft.

5. Washington Wizards - Jan Vesely (6'11" F, Czech Republic)

Washington has lots of flashy athletes and high talent guys, but no one to do all the dirty work and play a gritty style. Vesely could give them a Kirilenko, which would be an awesome fit. Offense and shot mechanics are a concern, but what he brings would be a great addition.

6. Utah Jazz (via NJ) - Kemba Walker (6'0" PG, Connecticut, Jr.)
7. Detroit Pistons - Bismack Biyombo (6'9" PF, Congo)
8. Cleveland Cavaliers (via LAC) - Jonas Valanciunas (6'10 PF/C, Lithuania)

Cleveland grabs a high talent center. They have the time and patience to ween him along. He's a bargain this late in the draft, even if a buyout issue forces them to wait on him.

9. Charlotte Bobcats - Kawhi Leonard (6'7" SF, San Diego State, So.)
10. Milwaukee Bucks - Marcus Morris (6'9" PF, Kansas, Jr.)
11. Golden State Warriors - Tristan Thompson (6'9" PF, Texas, Fr.)
12. Utah Jazz - Alec Burks (6'6" SG, Colorado, So.)
13. Phoenix Suns - Markieff Morries (6'10" PF/C, Kansas, Jr.)
14. Houston Rockets - Tobias Harris (6'8" F, Tennessee, Fr.)
15. Indiana Pacers - Klay Thompson (6'6" G/F, Washington State, Jr.)
16. Philadelphia 76ers - Jordan Hamilton (6'7" SF, Texas, So.)

These 3 picks (Harris, Thompson and Hamilton) could all go in any one of these spots, IMO. Harris has the highest ceiling, and could potentially play some PF, while the other two are good perimeter scorers.

17. New York Knicks - Jimmer Fredette (6'2" PG, BYU, Sr.)
18. Washington Wizards (via ATL) - Donatas Motiejunas (7'0" PF, Lithuania)

Serious questions about his heart and desire to play NBA basketball cause him to have a major slip. Washington gets a steal here. He could be a great pick and pop partner for Wall.

19. Charlotte Bobcats (via NOH) - Kenneth Faried (6'8" PF, Morehead State, Sr.)

Charlotte really emphasizes toughness in this draft. Jackson-Leonard-Faried-Thomas (if his head is on straight) is a group of 4 that can really get physical. Then again, there's a chance NY grabs Faried, in which case Jimmer would fall into Charlotte's lap, making him an obvious pick.

20. Minnesota Timberwolves (via MEM) - Chris Singleton (6'8" SF, Florida State, Jr.)
21. Portland Trailblazers - Reggie Jackson (6'3" G, Boston College, Jr.)

With Andre Miller not being in the long term plans of the Blazers, they grab an athletic and productive replacement.

22. Denver Nuggets - Lucas Nogueira (6'11" C, Brazil)
23. Houston Rockets (via Orl) - Nikola Mirotic (6'10" PF, Montenegro)

Two teams who could use long term big men take on a few international projects.

24. Oklahoma City Thunder - Tyler Honeycutt (6'8" SF, UCLA, So.)
25. Boston Celtics - Jordan Williams (6'10" PF/C, Maryland, So.)
26. Dallas Mavericks - Justin Harper (6'10" PF, Richmond, Sr.)
27. New Jersey Nets (via LAL) - Trey Thompkins (6'9'', PF, Georgia, Jr.)
28. Chicago Bulls (via MIA) - Travis Leslie (6'4" G/F, Georgia, Jr.)
29. San Antonio Spurs - Darius Morris (6'4" PG, Michigan, So)
30. Chicago Bulls - Nolan Smith (6'3" G, Duke, Sr.)

I actually think he goes 41 to LA or 42 to Indiana. I just don't see him as a better pick than other PGs/combos like Jenkins, Lee, Cole, Smith and Selby.

Joseph may have made the worst decision of anyone declaring for this draft.
