Hey guys,

Going to have a regular mock draft going up on hoopshabit.com as well as other regular draft coverage.

Have just put up the Sweet 16 edition and will keep updating regularly with versions like best case scenarios, worst case, statistical analysis and more

It's lengthy with a summary of each pick so you can find the full mock here: http://hoopshabit.com/nba-draft-2013-mo ... 6-edition/

But here is the top 10:

1. Charlotte Bobcats – Ben McLemore, SG
6’4”, 195 lbs, Kansas, Freshman

Extremely fortunate to retain his position atop this edition of the mock draft after an abysmal performance against North Carolina, Ben McLemore will get a chance to redeem himself when the Kansas Jayhawks take on Michigan in the Sweet 16. After a competitive first-round matchup against Western Kentucky, the Jayhawks were able to defeat the No. 8 seed, North Carolina, despite getting no production from their star shooting guard.

McLemore was 0-for-9 from the field and scored just two points for Kansas against North Carolina in one of the highest profile matchups in this year’s tournament. He was out of rhythm with his shot going 0-for-6 from downtown and failing to make an impact on a game that scouts would have been watching closely. His 11-point, six-rebound performance against Western Kentucky was significantly better, but he will need to turn things around quickly if he wants to remain in the discussion for the No. 1 pick.

With two of the next three selections getting eliminated in the second round of the tournament while the third recovers from major surgery, McLemore will at least get the chance for redemption in a huge Sweet 16 match up against a backcourt full of NBA prospects. While his stock is down after his showing so far, no one has done anything to overtake him at this stage.

2. Orlando Magic – Marcus Smart, PG
6’4”, 200 lbs, Oklahoma State, Freshman

Marcus Smart and the Oklahoma State Cowboys had an NCAA tournament to forget after being upset in the second round by No. 12 seed Oregon and Smart sustaining a wrist injury during the 68-55 loss.

Despite having an off shooting night going just 5-for-13 from the field, Smart was contributing all over the court for Oklahoma State. He finished with nine rebounds, four assists and five steals, all of which were team highs.

The Magic are still in the ideal draft position to find their lead guard of the future to join an outstanding young core. Despite the disappointing tournament appearance there would likely be few concerns in picking up the Oklahoma State freshman.

3. Cleveland Cavaliers – Nerlens Noel, PF/C
6’11”, 216 lbs, Kentucky, Freshman

Nerlens Noel could do little but watch as his Kentucky teammates were eliminated in the first round of the NIT. The team has struggled significantly since losing their star center to a torn ACL and as he started his rehabilitation from surgery, the Wildcats again showed how much they relied on his presence.

Noel will get enough time to full recover before the start of the 2013-14 NBA season when he will make his rookie debut. The main question mark for NBA teams now will be how he recovers his athleticism after such a significant injury. The Cavaliers are in an ideal situation with Kyrie Irving leading a group of talented young players through their rebuilding phase, adding an interior defender like Noel to that group would only help speed up the process and he has the potential to be one of the best defenders in the league down the track.

4. Phoenix Suns – Shabazz Muhammad, SF
6’6”, 223 lbs, UCLA, Freshman

Another early lottery pick to only make a brief appearance in the 2013 NCAA tournament, Shabbaz Muhammad and the UCLA Bruins were defeated convincingly by the Minnesota Golden Gophers 83-63 in the second round.

Despite scoring 20 points for the Bruins, Muhammad was shooting poorly and did little else to help his team overcome what was a large deficit for the majority of the game. Muhammad shot just 6-for-18 including a miserable 0-for-6 from 3. He missed all seven of his shot attempts in the first half and scored mostly in a late run once the game was well out of reach.

Even with a disappointing NCAA appearance and now some talk of Muhammad actually being a year older than initially believed, the Suns are looking for star player qualities and Muhammad still possesses that potential.

5. Detroit Pistons – Otto Porter, SF
6’8”, 200 lbs, Georgetown, Sophomore

In a loss that had fans all over the country tearing up their brackets, Otto Porter and the Georgetown Hoyas provided the biggest surprise in the tournament thus far going down in the second round to the No. 15-seed Florida Gulf Coast Eagles.

Porter, who struggled with his offense shot just 5-for-17 in the shocking loss, but did provide some signs of why he will still be a highly coveted pick in the early stages of the 2013 draft. Porter had a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with his 13 points, he made two 3-pointers and also contributed three assists. He was, as always, working hard on both ends of the court, but neither he nor his teammates could generate any efficient offense, finishing the game with a miserable 37.5 percent shooting performance.

Aside from the early exit, Porter briefly showed the intangibles that impress scouts and would not have done significant damage to his draft stock. He is an ideal fit alongside the Pistons young core and Detroit would not let one disappointing performance undo the great things Porter has shown all season.

6. New Orleans Hornets – Trey Burke, PG
6’0”, 190 lbs, Michigan, Sophomore

Trey Burke and his Michigan Wolverines have been one of the most impressive teams through the early stages of the NCAA tournament and come into the Sweet 16 having won their first two games by an average of 20 points. They easily accounted for South Dakota State 71-56 before making a statement with a 78-53 blowout victory against the No. 5 seed VCU.

Burke had a miserable night individually against South Dakota State, scoring in single digits for the first time this season on just 2-for-12 shooting. Despite the poor shooting performance and Burke taking a hard fall that caused him to leave the court briefly with elbow soreness, the point guard displayed his ability to control the game and finished with seven assists.

Burke was back to his old self in the third round, totalling 18 points, seven assists, two steals and two rebounds as the Wolverines easily advanced through to the Sweet 16. He displayed a bit of everything, setting up teammates, hitting jumpers from the outside and getting to the rim, finishing with both hands. Burke is leading his young Michigan team deep into the tournament and as expected will likely shoot up draft boards leading up to the 2013 NBA Draft. The Hornets would be well served teaming up a guard with Burke’s abilities with franchise cornerstone Anthony Davis.

7. Sacramento Kings – Cody Zeller, PF/C
7’0”, 240 lbs, Indiana, Sophomore

Cody Zeller and the Indiana Hoosiers will make a return to the Sweet 16 after victories over the James Madison Dukes and the Temple Owls. The Hoosiers easily accounted for the Dukes with an 83-62 victory before a huge test against Temple where they needed some late heroics to win 58-52.

Zeller has been a solid contributor, averaging 28 minutes per game through the first two games, he was quiet yet efficient going 4-for-5 from the field against James Madison in an 11-point, six-rebound performance. He had 15 points against Temple, including an impressive 7-for-8 from the free-throw line, to go along with six rebounds and two assists.

With a number of upsets early on, Zeller and the Hoosiers have done enough to progress through to the Sweet 16 and he has done no harm to his draft stock despite having two relatively quiet performances. By adding Zeller, the Kings would form a young, imposing front court tandem with DeMarcus Cousins to build around going forward. With chemistry and attitude issues a concern in Sacramento, bringing in someone with Zeller’s leaderships qualities and low maintenance personality would be a great way to try and continue to turn the franchise around.

8. Minnesota Timberwolves – Victor Oladipo, SG
6’5”, 210 lbs, Indiana, Junior

Along with Zeller, Indiana’s star swingman Victor Oladipo has been instrumental in their early tournament success with two solid performances. He provided some big shots late against Temple which included a high-pressure 3-pointer to seal the win.

Oladipo was the best player on the floor against Temple, finishing with 16 points, eight rebounds and going an impressive 7-for-12 from the field. Add that to a solid 11-point, six-rebound and three-assist game against James Madison, Oladipo has been one of the best performers through the first stages of the tournament.

With the Timberwolves’ need for a strong wing player to grow with their already impressive young core, as well as a desperate need for defensive minded players on the roster, they would be quick to snap up the versatile, defensive minded Oladipo if he was still on the board when their selection was on the board. Oladipo could add the athleticism and defensive intensity on the wings that Minnesota has been searching for.

9. Washington Wizards – Anthony Bennett, SF/PF
6’7”, 239 lbs, UNLV, Freshman

The UNLV Rebels were another surprising early-round exit in the NCAA tournament as they were defeated by the No. 12 seed California. UNLV was unable to deal with an impressive California defensive performance which held the Rebels to just 32.2 percent shooting.

Anthony Bennett was one of the few bright spots for UNLV and continues to impress with his recent performances despite the early departure from the tournament. Bennett had a team-high 15 points, 11 rebounds and two steals while getting to the free-throw line on 10 occasions, making seven. Bennett was exposed somewhat defensively against California’s frontcourt, especially reserve forward Robert Thurman, who went 6-for-6 in the post against Bennett, scoring 12 points in just 19 minutes.

Bennett continues to display his relentless ability to chase down rebounds, a strong, athletic finishing ability and good mobility for a big man. The Wizards have been playing significantly better as of late and find themselves much further down the draft board than they were even just a week ago, however adding a player with Bennett’s potential and abilities to play alongside their impressive young back court would be a huge victory for Washington.

10. Oklahoma City Thunder (via Toronto) – Alex Len, C
7’1”, 255 lbs, Maryland, Sophomore

Maryland center Alex Len did not get the opportunity to compete in the NCAA tournament and instead was relegated to play in the NIT where the Terrapins have advanced through the first two rounds. He has been quiet in both outings, averaging 6.5 points, three rebounds and two blocks in just 17 minutes per game.

He will be looking for a big performance in his next NIT game and Maryland remains one of the favorites for the NIT title. A continued deep run and some more impressive statistical performances would help Len avoid a drop in the rankings after what is looking like a quiet finish to the season for him.

The Raptors have been on the slide as of late and that could not be better news for the Oklahoma City Thunder. In search of a young big man to add to their front court and potentially give them some financial flexibility with the contract of Kendrick Perkins, the Thunder would be quick to snap up Len if he was still on the board. His rebounding, shot blocking and ability to finish inside would be a welcome addition to a team that will continue to compete for an NBA title for the foreseeable future.

I'm probably bucking conventional thought, but I don't really get the love for Ben McLemore at this point (at least as a #1 pick). He's a very athletic player, yes... but he doesn't handle the ball well, is way too passive at times, and has had multiple cold games. His defense needs a lot of work too.

Has there ever been an example of a player that got benched in the NCAA tournament, and still went #1 in the following draft? Not trying to hate on your mock, as it's what most people seem to think but I'd go either Noel or Smart at #1.

There are injury concerns with Noel, but if it's believed he will be completely healthy then you know he can be a very good to great defender in the NBA. Big men typically get overvalued

And Smart, while he's had some bad offensive games and his overall offensive numbers are not as good as McLemore, he almost always is a great defensive player. If GM's thought they could fix Smart's shot, he probably goes #1

Personally, if I was on the board with the number 1 pick I would be taking Noel... there's a perception/team need/draft stock etc element to creating the mock rather than just my personal opinion.

I actually think the hardest place to be drafting this year will be top 5, outside of that.. there are actually a lot of useful players that will have good NBA careers, but there's no superstar up top.

If McLemore is shut down again against Michigan, Noel could easily be No. 1 in the next version

Even then, CHA would still have to take Noel over Mclemore, since Gerald Henderson has emerged and they have no talent at the frontcourt.

Wow, a lot of effort put into this, but have to comment on the Bucks pick. That is really, really bad in that it doesn't fit a need, or a drafting philosophy we have seen from the Bucks in taking the raw/athletic freak, high upside player. Furthermore, 90% of the Bucks roster is in the PFand/orC mold as it sits today.

*Edit - I guess Plumlee fits the freak mold, but still doesn't make sense for MKE

PFand/orC
Illysova (just resigned)
Sanders (potential DPOY candidate)
Henson (just drafted as PF over the future)
Udoh PF/C
Moute (out of position at SF, fits best at PF)
Ayon (a PF/C that we apparently really like and insisted on getting back in the Harris deal)
Gooden
Pryz
Dalembert

So while we can expect Gooden, Daly and Pryz to maybe gone, there are no minutes for Plumlee on this team.

On the flip side we have;
Expiring - SF Dunleavy, Daniels, Redick
Opt out - SG Ellis
Restricted - Jennings

It is conceivable that Ish Smith is the only PG, SG or SF going into next season under contract. Please consider that in your mocks, they look really high quality and good analysis, so hopefully this input helps.

All very good points, M-C-G.. hadn't looked far enough down the Bucks' depth chart but now you point it out you are spot on.

I really think Jennings will be on the way out, so the back court will be extremely thin.. with the likes of Udoh (who I had forgotten about) and Henson looking like he shoudl be able to contribute next season, it seems far more likely the Bucks will target a point guard or swingman

Will be taken into account for the end of tournament edition for sure

Thanks for the feedback

Updated with a final four edition: http://hoopshabit.com/nba-draft-2013-mo ... r-edition/

Despite Burke and MCW both having disappointing games after this was originally posted (especially MCW) i don't think it would affect it much.

1. Charlotte Bobcats – Nerlens Noel, PF/C

6’11”, 216lbs, Kentucky, Freshman

You know it’s a strange NBA draft when a player recovering from a torn ACL injury has his stock go up. After a disappointing tournament from the other top draft prospects, Noel has likely regained his position as the top prospect and is unlikely to move from that position.

Noel showed enough in his single season in Kentucky prior to his injury to show that he will be an impact defensive player, an elite shot blocker and an athletic finisher around the rim. The question will be how he recovers from his injury and his ability to stay healthy, but his mix of size, potential and athletic ability makes him worth the risk in this draft.

2. Orlando Magic – Marcus Smart, PG

6’4”, 200lbs, Oklahoma State, Freshman

The impressive performances of the Orlando Magic’s new young players have surprised many. In what was expected to be a long road to rebuilding in Orlando, the likes of Nikola Vucevic, Tobias Harris, Andrew Nicholson and Co. seem to have the team on the fast track back to relevance.

With veteran point guard Jameer Nelson still running the offense, the Magic’s biggest area of need right now is adding a young lead guard to grow with the rest of their young team. A number of teams would take Ben McLemore with the No. 2 pick, but Smart is unquestionably a top five talent and fits the Magic’s long-term plans perfectly.

3. Phoenix Suns – Ben McLemore, SG

6’4”, 195lbs, Kansas, Freshman

Ben McLemore had mixed results in the NCAA tournament and perhaps missed an opportunity to move to the top of the NBA draft. The No.1-seeded Jayhawks were sent home by the outstanding clutch shooting of Trey Burke and Michigan in the Sweet 16 in what was the last in a disappointing run of games for McLemore. He had a much-improved performance with 20 points after struggling in his previous games, but it was not enough to avoid elimination.

The Suns would be extremely happy to land McLemore with a third selection as he could wind up being the best scorer, or potentially player in the draft. Playing in Phoenix’s high-paced offense alongside point guard Goran Dragic would give McLemore open space to get his shots, run the fast break and potentially put up impressive rookie numbers.

4. Cleveland Cavaliers – Shabazz Muhammad, SF

6’6”, 223lbs, UCLA, Freshman

Disappointing tournament performance aside, Shabazz Muhammad has long been one of the most intruiging and talented prospects in this draft class. The Cavaliers are in need of a star to build around and Muhammad offers perhaps the highest potential of becoming an All-Star and leading scorer of anyone else on the board.

The Cavaliers already boast an impressive core of young talent. Adding the potential of Muhammad to Kyrie Irving, Dion Waiters and a number of skilled frontcourt players could see the Cavaliers field the most impressive young core in the NBA.

5. Detroit Pistons – Otto Porter, SF

6’8”, 200lbs, Georgetown, Sophomore

Otto Porter did not have much of a chance to impress in the NCAA tournament, but he had already established himself as a sure-fire top 10 pick and could not be a better fit for the Detroit Pistons as currently constructed. With a young, talented frontcourt set and the continued development of point guard Brandon Knight, Porter would complete an extremely talented young starting five that could lead the team back towards the Eastern Conference playoffs.

Porter has great size for an NBA small forward and a versatile game that should complement those around him. His ability to defend, finish and improved shooting stroke would be an ideal fit in Detroit.

6. New Orleans Hornets – Trey Burke, PG

6’0”, 190lbs, Michigan, Sophomore

One of the biggest stories in the NCAA tournament thus far, Trey Burke and the Michigan Wolverines have been outstanding on their way to the Final Four. After two easy victories early on, Michigan faced a huge test with No.1-seeded Kansas in the Sweet 16. After trailing for much of the game, Burke led Michigan back from the brink of defeat and nailed shot after shot down the stretch to extend the game to overtime. His hot shooting continued and he finished with 23 points and 10 assists in the victory.

He followed up his clutch performance against Kansas with another great game against Florida in the Elite Eight. Burke went for 15 points, but showed his value all over the court with eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Burke has proven his talent, his leadership abilities and will get another chance to impress in the Final Four against Syracuse. Justifying his previous shot up the rankings, Burke has locked himself as a top 10 selection and the Hornets would love to have a leader at point guard like Burke to develop with big man Anthony Davis.

7. Sacramento Kings – Victor Oladipo, SG

6’5”, 210lbs, Indiana, Junior

Despite the No.1 seeded-Indiana falling to Syracuse in the Sweet 16, Oladipo did himself no harm with a solid 16-point performance, shooting 5-for-6 from the field, pulling in three rebounds, three steals and again displaying the defensive prowess that will be his calling card in the NBA.

The Kings are in desperate need of a change of culture and Oladipo’s defensive mindset could be one of a number of positive moves needed to turn the franchise around. Already with young players on the roster capable of scoring, especially big man DeMarcus Cousins, having a versatile wing defender to set the tone for the team would prove extremely beneficial.

8. Oklahoma City Thunder (via Toronto) – Alex Len, C

7’1”, 255lbs, Maryland, Sophomore

The Oklahoma City Thunder continue to be one of the most dominant teams in the Western Conference and will have the opportunity to add even more young talent to their roster with the Raptors’ lottery pick. The Thunder need to manage their cap situation carefully over the next few seasons and one major change may be trying to find a cheaper, younger replacement for starting center Kendrick Perkins.

Alex Len has great size and raw talent that he showed in flashes during his freshman season. The 7’1” Len would be given the opportunity to develop on a championship team with a long-term view of becoming the team’s starting center. He has ideal length, size and is athletic enough to become a great defender at the NBA level, if he can continue to work on his positional play and further develop his offensive repertoire he could become an extremely serviceable starting center.

9. Washington Wizards – Anthony Bennett, SF/PF

6’7”, 239lbs, UNLV, Freshman

The Washington Wizards are having an impressive end to the season with a healthy John Wall leading the team to a better than .500 record since his return. With a young backcourt set for the foreseeable future, the focus will turn to finding a big man to take over from the incumbent veterans.

Anthony Bennett has displayed the potential to be a star in the NBA. An athletic, physically imposing forward, albeit slightly undersized for the power forward position, Bennett has a versatile offensive game that would benefit from the speed and passing ability of Wall. The Wizards would love to have an athletic forward who could consistently finish above the rim on lobs while also providing the spacing needed to allow the Wizards’ guards to drive into the paint.

10. Minnesota Timberwolves – Cody Zeller, PF/C

7’0”, 240lbs, Indiana, Sophomore

Cody Zeller’s performance in the Sweet 16 could not have been any worse for his draft stock, seemingly displaying all of the existing concerns that scouts have had about him throughout his NCAA career. In the loss to Syracuse, Zeller managed to put up 10 rebounds but scored just 10 points on 3-11 shooting, often struggling with the interior size of the Syracuse zone and got blocked on multiple occasions.

Despite the concerns, Zeller has still proven to be one of the most consistently productive big men in college basketball and with uncertainty around Nikola Pekovic due to his restricted free-agent status, the Timberwolves could add an additional productive player to their frontcourt. The Timberwolves would love to add a go-to scoring wing player but there is no one worth taking a flyer on with a top 10 selection and Zeller would seemingly be the best player available.

11. Philadelphia 76ers – Glenn Robinson III, SF

6’6”, 210lbs, Michigan, Freshman

Glenn Robinson III and the rest of the Michigan Wolverines have seen their stock continue to rise on the back of an impressive run to the Final Four. Robinson was solid in the Sweet 16 upset over the No.1 seed Kansas with 13 points and eight rebounds to go along with stifling defense on the Jayhawks’ backcourt. He was much quieter against Florida with just six points to go along with two rebounds and blocks, but again was instrumental on defense and is proving he could be an elite defensive wing in the NBA.

Often switching on to opposing teams’ point guards to pressure the ball, Robinson III’s versatility on the defensive end as well as his improving offensive ability gives him an extremely high ceiling and would offer the 76ers a wing player with star potential to grow alongside All-Star Jrue Holiday and potentially Andrew Bynum.

12. Portland Trail Blazers – Steven Adams, C

7’0”, 250lbs, Pittsburgh, Freshman

In what was considered a surprise, Pittsburgh freshman Steven Adams has declared for the 2013 NBA draft and instantly becomes one of the most intruiging prospects in the entire draft. The 7’0” Adams had an inconsistent freshman season in the NCAA, but has all the physical tools to become successful in the NBA.

Still extremely raw, Adams has displayed immense natural talent, but needs to continue developing his understanding of the game. He shows the potential to become a true defensive anchor and has all the physical tools to become successful. The Trail Blazers need to find a long-term fit at the center position to go along with their existing young stars. Between Adams and rookie Meyers Leonard, the Blazers would be in the ideal situation to develop two young big men and find their starting center of the future.

13. Dallas Mavericks – Michael Carter-Williams, PG

6’6”, 185lbs, Syracuse, Sophomore

Michael Carter-Williams has perhaps seen his draft stock rise more than any other player in the NCAA tournament with an impressive string of performances leading Syracuse through to the Final Four. He was dominant in the team’s win over the No.1 seed Indiana with 24 rebounds, five rebounds and four steals. He was scoring from all over the court, hitting 3s, mid-range jump shots and getting it inside. He then backed it up with one of the most unique and all-around performances in the entire tournament with 12 points, six assists, eight rebounds and five steals against Marquette in the regional final.

He has shown his ability to lead a team, can score when needed or rely on setting up others depending on how the game develops and his length defensively is consistently producing turnovers from the opposition. The Mavericks are in need of a primary ball handler and Carter-Williams could become a leader in the next generation of Dallas basketball.

14. Utah Jazz -C.J. McCollum, PG

6’3”, 190lbs, Lehigh, Senior

The Utah Jazz seem set to free their young, talented big men next season with their current veterans both seemingly on their way out as free agents. With their front court solidified and swingman Gordon Hayward looking better and better with every season, the attention in Utah must turn to developing a guard to lead this team into the next phase of their development.

C.J. McCollum is an experienced NCAA combo guard with great scoring ability and leadership qualities. Despite injury cutting short his senior season, McCollum has had ample opportunity to display his talent and will still be a borderline lottery selection come draft time. The Jazz will be searching for a point guard in the off-season and McCollum is the best on the board in this position.

seriously how hard is it to realize:

Lakers pick 1-14 goes to PHX, Cavs get Miami pick
Lakers pick 15+ goes to CLE, Suns get Miami pick

If you are going to spend the effort to promote your blog and post a topic, do a little bit of research http://basketball.realgm.com/nba/draft/ ... s/detailed (or check the standings yourself instead of copying outdated standings from nbadraft.net)? Why are you draft gurus exempt from getting picks correct?

Your list isn't bad I just don't see the Cavs going that route and NO drafting a PG. The Wolves are in an interesting situation where they pick.
