Drake Powell goes from not being drafted to being oicked 6 in less than 4 weeks. Interesting process. I'm sure other mock drafts had no influence.

Drake Powell has been in the lottery and even top 10 of several mocks for months now.

Oh, they most definitely did.
I will fully admit to being a "scout" mostly through box scores and stats. I really just don't know much about incoming freshmen, there isn't much data to work with, I'll fully admit to mostly just guessing and going off of reports/other mocks I see at this stage of the process. The highlights I saw from Powell that I hadn't seen prior looked pretty good too, though they were certainly just highlights.

I am also sometimes inclined to make snap decisions, especially with guys I don't know too much about (yet) or with guys I think could have very highly variant opinions about their profiles as prospects (like Qingdao's Hansen Yang or South Carolina's Collin Murray-Boyles, although it does seem like most are high on him at the moment and I'm certainly down to get on board with that).

At this point I just want to aggregate a list of guys who I happen to think are MOST likely to have their names circulated (or who I think should), but I have a few longer lists on some spreadsheets and it really does seem like a crapshoot so early on trying to guess who will end up where.

People are seriously sleeping on Filip Jovic his level of toughness/positive energy/hustle is on a god tier level despite him being undersized pound for pound he's one of the strongest players (basketball strength)I have ever seen and probably one of the best Serbian leapers ever (obviously not on the tier of the Americans but above average), if he could even hit like 33-35% from 3 he would be an amazing spark plug at any level of basketball.

He reminds me of a plus athlete Eduardo Najara with a small splash of D.Sabonis with strength/finishing around the rim (not talking about post game). He could really be a nice add as a late 2nd round/undrafted type.

Markovic has looked really good as well the first two games really showed his all around skills. He's a late 1st round pick at worst. 6'11 with a great motor and good skills will get you places a modern day stretch/skill 4.

As far as Mirkovic goes I watched him all last season and had no idea he was even an NBA prospect and have seen one game this year where he was very bad I will keep watching maybe it's something I missed about him still very young.

Yeah I'm probably sleeping on Jovic and slow to catch up here. I thought he might be more restrained in his role since Jelavic and Markovic seem to be the nominal starters, but I think Jovic is still probably going to get plenty of opportunity and he's productive with it. I'd still like to see him be a more consistent finisher and shooter myself but he sure does seem to have no problem making good looks for himself. I still think it's probably Jelavic and/or Markovic that enter the draft this year and Jovic the following or something, but I definitely don't mean to write him off.

I think Markovic still had some things to work on defensively and with his turnover rate coming into this season. It's awesome to see the efficient start he's had, if I had to guess I don't think there's any doubt he's an NBA prospect. I'd have to think it's just a matter of when and how highly regarded.
As it is, I have been loosely updating my mock draft and just haven't gotten around to posting it here yet and the latest version I made does have Bogo at 27. I personally don't necessarily view him as a "surefire" first rounder, at least yet, but I definitely do agree with the idea that's a fair range for him at the moment.

I think I'm probably a bit higher on Mirkovic than most, and that's probably the result of most of the tape I've seen of him being the clips from one of his best performances in the season last year. I think only some outlets seem to project him in 2025 draft boards, though certainly some do and I think he is often considered a first rounder by those outlets. I know the Grizzlies took some time around the 2024 draft/Summer League to scout him, so he's 100% on SOME radars.
I happen to think his playstyle is very much like Julius Randle's. I think that can be polarizing, because Randle DOESN'T look pretty and often plays on a knife's edge- he kinda seems too comfortable losing control and just happens to have gotten quite good at steering through potential disaster with good court vision and quick reflexes. But it certainly doesn't always work.
I think Mirkovic isn't quite as chiseled but has similar strength/size/mobility and just the fact that he COULD sometimes play bully ball with skilled adults as a 17 year old is intriguing to me. I think he's developing some solid shooting and iso skills, such that I think he could be more like the Julius Randle of today than even Julius Randle himself was entering the league.
And while he was pretty darn good in the Montenegrin League and I think he did genuinely warrant playing time in the ABA last season, I don't think he was on the right side of efficiency-- I do not think he was able to quite successfully balance on the knife's edge in the ABA the way Julius Randle somehow manages to in the NBA. He didn't stink, but he has a ways to go. And so in that regard I don't think he's by any means a "sure thing" in the NBA, because I think that's a playstyle that can go very wrong if the player isn't downright amazing at it. But I think the potential is real. I think if I'm not just completely wrong and the (almost stark IMO) comparison to Randle isn't baseless, that's something teams ought to have lottery interest in.
But yeah he had a terrible debut game this season. I could simply just be wrong. Heck, the fact that he isn't STARTING for Derby somewhat surprises me, although perhaps it shouldn't. I did drop him down to 23 in my most recent mock.

I just doubled checked Mirkovic's age for some reason I thought he was like 19/20 last year and he was only 17 which is crazy to be playing in the ABA at that age (Derby is hard to get playing time in both the Ivisic brothers struggled to get time as 19/20/21 year olds) they are ultra competitive middle of the pack teaM), Djrusic/Topic all looked bad at 17 in the ABA. My big concern for Jelavic is he reads the game super slow (Skal Labissarie) he's got the size/skills but the quick thinking seems lacking and his shooting is yet to come around.

Another great Jovic/Markovic (aside from turnovers) game away from home against a Dubai team (former NBA/Euroleaguers) that beat Red Star and crushed Cedivita in the first 2 rounds.

Jovic 16points (2/4 from 3) 6 boards and 3 blocks in 25mins
Markovic 11 points (2/4 from 3) 5 assists 4 steals 3 turnovers

With college actually underway, I figured I'd update this mock. The college season is only a week in, so quite a few of these are snap decisions and may look silly very soon, but I intend to adjust accordingly. It is nice to have *something* to base this off of beyond pure speculation. I also wanted to include a few names that aren't on my mock draft but are guys from mid/low major conferences that I want to highlight as potential underrated prospects afterwards.

    ROUND 1

  59. Brice Dessert, Strasbourg: French LNB 2003
  60. Jaxson Robinson, Kentucky: NCAA 2002

And here are a few guys who I think, at the very least, *might* warrant NBA recognition but aren't at programs that would typically garner it:

Re: Jazz 2025 Mock Draft Thread

Post#12 » by JazzP » Wed Dec 11, 2024 7:04 pm

Since it has been a bit over a month since I updated this mock draft on this forum, I figured I should do so. This is such a crazy good class. There are a few players I think have very strong cases as early entrants, but because I believe there will be 2 senior classes who are automatically eligible due to the ending of the extra COVID year, as well as just how strong the prospects in this class already were, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of early entrants decided to wait a year to declare for the draft.

I will admit that I am a bit behind in keeping up with each box score, and I'm only part way through catching up, but I had been looking at season statistics to try to verify standouts that I have seen. I don't mind having a bit of an incomplete understanding at this point in time, because the season is incomplete anyways. But I do feel as though this mock deserves an update!! Re: Jazz 2025 Mock Draft Thread

Post#13 » by JazzP » Tue Dec 31, 2024 8:24 pm

Another update for the new year! There are certainly some underclassmen and seniors from smaller schools that I think can break through as prospects that would be projected as draft picks, but I'd like to wait and see how the storylines play out. This is what I have at the moment. My mock is growing ever more freshman-heavy, and I'm not sure if that will ultimately be how the draft actually looks, but dang there do seem to be quite a few sensational freshmen- most of whom were fairly highly regarded in high school rankings, too. (Edit: I had to update my draft as I was typing it out here because I realized Jayden Quaintance was born in 2007 and therefore ineligible for the draft this year, but he was initially on here too).

I do have Dylan Harper passing Cooper Flagg for #1 at the moment, but I don't feel as though it's an opinion I am deeply beholden to. I don't think a team can really go wrong here, and it's more about preference as to what playstyle they'd like to have. I think a team that loses the lottery is more likely to want a slightly more ball-dominant player like Harper, but both strike me as stellar, team defining prospects. I certainly don't think Flagg has played his way OUT of the competition for #1. I do think everyone else is pretty much fighting for #3, at least in current speculation.

I also did include Bennett Stirtz in this mock as an underclassman that I think might declare this year, riding an impressive season from Drake and a breakout into the D1 scene and what may be the most opportune moment for him (even amidst a very strong class this year). I do think the level of competition and his shooting struggles might make a case for some doubt, but I think it is also clear that he has some serious talent and that Drake essentially cannot fathom playing without him on the floor; he is averaging 37.8 minutes per game, more than anybody besides Mikal Bridges is playing in the NBA (even though NBA games are 48 minutes to college basketball's 40).

Here's what my mock looks like heading into the new year!

    ROUND 1
  1. Dylan Harper, Rutgers: NCAA 2006
  2. Cooper Flagg. Duke: NCAA 2006
  3. Boogie Fland, Arkansas: NCAA 2006
  4. Ace Bailey, Rutgers: NCAA 2006

I figure this is due an update; I'll be honest, I'm still 2-3 days behind the action, but I couldn't help but update the mock just from where I'm at. I forgot that the Knicks have forfeited their 2nd round pick, so I have reduced the mock to 59 picks now. This is what I have:

Re: Jazz 2025 Mock Draft Thread

Post#19 » by JazzP » Tue Apr 1, 2025 3:16 am

Ok, it seems like my posts are being cut off unless the window is minimized and *narrow* enough to reveal the full text. That's annoying and disappointing. I hope that gets fixed soon.

Anyways, I have an update for this to include teams- I am pretty certain I don't have the pick rights entirely correct, I'm just borrowing what NBADraft.net has logged currently. With a few games left in the NBA season anyway, I think it's still a bit too far out to be concerned with that.
But I know that: Dylan Harper, RJ Luis, Alex Toohey, Yaxel Lendeborg, and Isaac Nogues have officially declared for early entry in the NBA draft.
I also wanted to include Hannes Steinbach and Dame Sarr, since they have been surging fairly recently. I'm not sure whether either will declare, but I think they both certainly have cases. I also have Noah Penda lower than where I generally rank him (as well as most others), and I think that's just a byproduct of any given random draft simulation- sometimes there's an odd man out that falls a bit. But I do think he will be drafted if he declares, practically no matter what, at least.

Here's what I have, whether or not it shows up here easily...

    ROUND 1
