2010 Mock Pre-Lotto (1st and 2nd round---5/13)
I am really starting to take into consideration team needs. The more I see of this draft the more I like it, picks 1-45 are guys that would have been considered first round talent last year. Just like 2009 was a point guard draft, 2010 is a center draft; the NBA has needed this for a while.
Soon I will have all of these player's height and position listed along with a bit of commentary about who my favorite players are in the draft. Input is appreciated, especially if it is about a team you follow.
----------------------First Round----------------------
1. New Jersey - John Wall 6-4 PG
Superb athlete, decent court vision. Is smaller than his listed height but well worth all the hype he has gotten. Gets into the lane well and has a decent jump shot. A very good floor general with all of the potential to be a top five player in the NBA. Will be a top 5 point guard the second he steps onto an NBA court.
Other Picks: Nemenja Bjelica, Artsiom Parakhouski
2. Minnesota - Evan Turner 6-7 G/F
Not a jaw dropping athlete, but he does everything really well - great passer and penatrator. He will need to work on his perimeter shot, but at this point I think the most appropriate comparison is a less-athletic version of McGrady.
Other Picks: Paul George, Kevin Seraphin, Jarvis Varnado, Armon Johnson, Lance Stephanson
3. Sacramento - DeMarcus Cousins 6-11 C
I think that Cousins has great potential. He is big, has been effective in limited minutes and seems to have a good head on his shoulders.
One of the things that has impressed me most about Cousins is his footwork and speed near the basket. He knows how to use his speed and athleticism to his advantage. Cousins has great size and strength near the hoop - he could play power forward or center in the NBA. Defensively he has great potential. He already has a knack for rebounding and if he works on his help side D he will be very formidable.
I have Sacramento taking Cousins over Favors because they already have Thompson at power forward and Hawes future in Sacramento seems to be in doubt.
Other Picks: Terrico White
4. Golden State - Derrick Favors 6-10 F/C
Hasn't taken over any games yet, but Favors is producing admirably for only playing 26 minutes per game. A lot of what he has done is overshadowed by the accomplishments of DeMarcus Cousins (who is in a similar role but dominating), however you cannot overlook Favors potential. The fact that he has played well despite being in a system where he doesn't see the ball as often as guys like Gani Lawal is a testament to the type of player he is, and can become.
Other Picks: Stanley Robinson
5. Washington - Al Farouq-Aminu 6-8 F
Aminu has so much potential it would be hard for a lot of teams to pass on him, he has size, speed and strength but he still has a long way to go in order to become a complete player. He has decent touch on his freethrows which gives me hope that he can develop his jump shot. He is strong and fast which is 1/2 of what you want in a small forward - but the other half (skill) is only partly developed. He has nice defensive instincts which go a long way toward making him not just an upside pick but his jump-shot and ball handling have a ways to go before he is a complete player.
Other Picks: Gani Lawal, Dominique Jones
6. Detroit - Cole Aldrich 6-11 C
Has been the leader of a great Kansas team for the last two years. Great anticipation of shots, and has decent athleticism. Good motor. Needs to improve his jump shot and post moves on offense in order to become an elite center. At times he seems like he has clubs for hands. Will dive on the floor for any loose ball. Great rebounder. Sets good screens and knows how to execute on the pick and roll. Has a good hook-shot but other than that has little to offer on offense besides the occasional tip.
Other Picks: Sherron Collins
7. Philadelphia - Greg Monroe 6-10 PF
Very skilled power forward, but has big questions as to his work ethic. I don’t think that is going to be an issue, but others will disagree. He is a great passing power forward (ala Chris Webber) with a decent jump shot. Needs to become more physical, but has the potential to become an amazing player. Can absolutely take over games with is passing - not many players of his size can say that.
(Enters Draft?)
Other Picks: N/A
8. LA Clippers - Wesley Johnson 6-7 S/F
A very refined and advanced player and more NBA ready than anyone other than Turner. Part of this is that he's a junior in college and most of the other players at this point are sophomores or freshman.
He has great form on his jump shot and fits well into Syracuse's offense. Seems very system oriented which coaches love - but at times seems to complacent, he needs to demand the ball more to catch the eyes of more scouts. Johnson is a good athlete in the prototypical small forward mold. A good defender, long - can guard college power forwards and wing players which will help his transition into the NBA. I see him as a better version of Travis Outlaw - which is a very good thing.
Other Picks: Aubrey Coleman
9. Utah (New York) - Ekpe Udoh 6-11 C/F
A an extremely long and mobile player. He's tall with tremendous athletic ability for a seven footer. Unlike most centers he is a very good ball handler with the ability to initiate the fast break on his own. Other than his ability to handle the ball and attack the lane he has a limited offensive skill-set, however there are a lot of things that will come to him in time.
Other Picks: Jerome Jordan
10. Indiana - Ed Davis 6-9 P/F
Hasn't impressed me (yet). Needs to become a lot more physical if he wants to avoid becoming the next in a very long line of high-potential busts (see Patrick O’Bryant, Chris Taft, Samiki Walker). What I do see though is a very mobile power forward that has a body that if filled out would make him very formidable physically.
Other Picks: Elliot Williams, Scottie Reynolds
11. New Orleans - Hassan Whiteside 7-0 C
Has tremendous potential. Whiteside has the build of the prototypical center than makes GM's drool, the length, athleticism and hand-eye coordination. He also has a great offensive skill set - nice hands, decent footwork and a good jump-shot for a center make him a good option for a team on that side of the court. He is also a great shot-blocker and rebounder. Will need to add weight to his frame and overcome any perceived character issues, but he has the potential to be a top three center in the NBA.
Other Picks: Da'Sean Butler
12. Memphis - Eric Bledsoe 6-1 P/G
Has nice size and is a good athlete. Transitioned well to being an off-the-ball player but will get his chance to shine at Kentucky next year when John Wall is gone (if he returns). The run of point guards under Callipari is truly astonishing and Bledsoe is a good player to continue that tradition (although he is not quite the phenom that Wall and Rose were).
Other Picks: Larry Sanders, Quincy Pondexter
13. Toronto - Kyle Orton 6-10 C/F
Extremely raw big man. Has decent athletecism and a good frame. It sounds like scouts really like the tools he has. One thing that has been noticed is that he has a real nice bank shot within 12 feet, which is a really nice weapon for a center to develope. If guys like Tyson Chandler and Samuel Dalembert had a similar "go to move" they would be much more of a weapon than they currently are.
Other Picks: Dexter Pittman
14. Houston - Xavier Henry 6-6 G/F
He has decent form on his jumpshot, but a couple of minor corrections need to be made that will turn him into an "elite" player. He doesn't always square up (ala CJ Miles) and he releases right after the peak of his jump. He is fairly athletic but doesn't really do anything eye-popping. I am excited to see how he and Wes Johnson do in the NBA.
Other Picks: N/A
15. Milwaukee (CHI) - Patrick Patterson 6-8 P/F
I haven't been too terribly impressed by his performance this year. A good athlete, slightly undersized. He could be a very good role-player at the NBA level but doesn't impress me as a future star. Falls in love with his jumper too much sometimes, he is much more effective when he is working near the low-post area.
Other Picks: Luke Babbit, Charles Garcia
16. Minnesota (CHA) - Solomon Alabi 7-1 C
One of the "high-upside" picks in this draft. Has all the measurables that you like to see in a prospect. He moves well and has good hands which is a huge thing for a center - I think that he is a better prospect than Aldrich or Whiteside. To me worst case scenario is that Alabi becomes a taller version of Samuel Dalembert.
(Enters Draft?)
17. Chicago (MIL) - James Anderson 6-6 G/F
A gifted scorer. Hits on his jump-shot at a respectable percentage but needs to improve his mechanics. Good athlete with the tools to become a nice defensive player.
Other Picks: Terrico White
18. Miami - Paul George 6-7 S/F
A great shooter with athleticism, will elevate any team's level of play as a role player. Shoots 91% from the free throw line. Has better potential than people give him credit for. I think that he will be a very good pro.
Other Picks: N/A
19. Oklahoma City - Donatus Motiejunas 7 F/C
Has great length and height. Needs to pack some muscle on his frame to become a true threat in the post. Will get knocked around his first couple of years in the NBA, but with the right conditioning could become a threat. Needs work on his jump-shot.
20. San Antonio - Avery Bradley 6-1 G
Great defender that plays with passion and hustles every time down the court. Has a knack for poking the ball away from offensive players. Decent shooter - will never be a primary scorer, but what he offers more than make up for his short-comings. Great all-around athlete, jumps well, fast, good hand-eye coordination.
(Enters Draft?)
Other Picks: Brian Zoubek
21. Boston - Gordon Hayward
Has great form on his jump shot which is surprising considering the percentage he shoots at. Very good at getting into the paint, has great ball handling skills for his height.
(Enters Draft?)
Other Picks: Miroslav Raduljica
22. Portland - Devin Ebanks
Ebanks is having a bad season marred by off-the-court issues, but so did players like Rudy Gay... He doesn't have that potential, but he still has all the physical tools to be a solid NBA player.
Other Picks: N/A
23. Atlanta - Damion James
Great rebounder, uses his size well in the post. Relies too much on his strength at times, strength that won't be nearly as pronounced when he makes it into the NBA. Made the right decision to stay with Texas.
24. Minnesota (UT) - Kevin Seraphin
Don't know much about him yet. Could possibly rise a lot in this mock.
25. Memphis (DEN) - Larry Sanders
This years big "measureables" pick. 6-10 with a huge 7-6 wing span. Raw offensively but has great ability on the defensive end due to his athleticism (blocks 3 shots per game).
26. Oklahoma City (PHX) - Willie Warren 6-4 G
Solid Offensive player, but short for a shooting guard, and too shot-first for a point guard. Another Jason Terry/Ben Gordon?
27. New Jersey (DAL) - Nemenja Bjelica
A do-it-all small forward in the mold of Hedo Turkoglu. Has great ball handling skills and passer. Huge size for his point guard skill set (6-10)...
28. Orlando - Kalin Lucas
Has great end-to-end speed. Seems at first glance to be too score-first, but you also have to consider what he has around him. I don't think he is a 'pure' point-guard, but I do think he will have a successful career as a backup which is what you are looking for at the end of the first round, but if he gets drafted higher (18-21) his career could be a bit of a disappointment.
Other Picks(s): Luke Harangody
29. Memphis (LAL) - Quincy Pondexter
Has had great success at the college level. A very good shooter from 3-point range and the free-throw line (40% and 80%). Tweener but with a good skill-set. Good rebounder for his size (8 per game).
30. Washington (CLE) - Gani Lawal
He has great size and a great motor. He uses his body well down low and has the potential to become a great backup F/C. Seems to always be hustling which is a thing NBA coaches (and any coach ) love.
----------------------Second Round----------------------
31. New Jersey - Artsiom Parakhouski
Has good size for the center position but has been bothered in the past by length. A prolific rebounder, which is one of the skills that seems to translate well from college to the pros.
32. Minnesota - Jarvis Varnado
Prolific shot blocker. Not much in the way of offense other than tips and rebounds. A steal in the second round.
33. Detroit - Sherron Collins
Lightning quick, strong for his size. Has been a fixture on a dominating Kentucky team. Attacks the basket fearlessly, not turnover prone, decent shooter.
34. Golden State - Stanley Robinson 6-9 F
Robinson is another one of the recent crop of athletic, swiss-army knife small forwards. He is a great athlete and a game changer at the college level.
35. Washington - Dominique Jones
Another one of the classic "tweener" guards. He has the height to play shooting guard which gives him a much better shot to be an NBA caliber talent.
36. Sacramento - Terrico White
I just have no clue what to think when I see him. He's on an anemic team, isn't assertive, but he still catches your eye. In the end I don't think he declares this year.
37. Milwaukee (PHI) - Luke Babbit
Good shooter with limited athletecism. He's a great rebounder for a small forward, and rebounding is one of the few skills that always translates well into the NBA. He is a lefty which could turn out being a nice advantage for him.
38. New York (LAC) - Darrington Hobson
Very smooth overall game. A good shooter with decent athleticism. Gets lost sometimes on offense, not very assertive. A project player that could pay off big in the long run.
39. New York - Jerome Randle
Quick, short, good passer with nice ball handling skills. Would fit well in a run-and-gun offense (ala Brooks, but with less talent - maybe DJ Augustine?). Shoots 40% from 3 and 93% from the free throw line.
40. Indiana - Elliot Williams
Attacks the basket hard. Is a good shooter which opens up opportunities to drive to the hole and draw fouls or find the open man.
41. Chicago - Manny Harris
Has great body control when he is playing, doesn't try to over-do things but is still aggressive. Could play point guard or be a shooting guard that takes some ball handling duties away from the point guard. Has decent form on his jump shot and hits free throws at a respectable rate. Reminds me of Antonio Daniels in many ways.
42. New Orleans - Da'Sean Butler
The West Virginia player that should be getting hype. A good scorer and defender. Has great form on his shot, moves well with and without the ball. Tore his ACL which could hurt his draft stock....a lot...
43. Minnesota (HOU) - Armon Johnson
Attacks the lane, good speed. Has a knack for scoring but he needs to work on his jump shot.
44. LA Lakers (MEM) - Craig Brackins
Has regressed from last year significantly. Still a decent prospect. Reminiscent of David West with his game (oriented in the high-post).
45. Toronto - Dexter Pittman
Pittman has a great chance at improving his draft stock this year in Texas. He has nice soft hands and great size. People also seemed to be enamored with his work ethic - and that is going to help him translate his game into the pros. Right now he dominated the college game because of his strength (ala Dajuan Blaire) but he is going to have to work in order to become an effective NBA F/C.
46. Phoenix (CHA) - Sylvan Landesberg
Decent shooter and scorer at the college level. A good rebounder for his position, young.
47. Milwaukee - Charles Garcia
A huge question coming into the NCAA tournament is whether or not Charles Garcia can bring his team past the round of 64 (if they are even in the Tournament). If Garcia has a good showing it would go a long way toward moving him up in the draft because at this point he is an "unknown quantity".
48. Minnesota (MIA) - Lance Stephanson
Wasn't the most impressive player in college. Good ball handler and size but the rest of his game needs a lot of work.
49. Dallas (POR) - Michael Washington
Long and athletic. A true hustle player.
50. San Antonio - Brian Zoubek
Huge, sets good screens, mobile. A good defender and rebounder but very limited scoring the basketball.
51. Boston - Miroslav Raduljica
Big European center with a good offensive skill-set. Soft. Weak defender. Shooting up draft boards at the moment, but I think that he will still be a second round pick.
52. Phoenix (OKC) - Trevor Booker
An athletic power forward. He is a bit short to be playing the position he does, but makes up for it with his strength. Not a very assertive player.
53. Atlanta - Jon Scheyer
Very good shooter, nice size for either point guard or shooting guard. Not an eye-popping athlete - no real position.
54. Charlotte (PHX) - Wayne Chism
Has soft hands in the post, very creative with the ball down low. Has a solid frame but is undersized. A very enthusiastic player.
55. LA Clippers (DEN) - Aubrey Coleman
Has been an elite scorer for Houston.
56. Utah - Jerome Jordan
Long and athletic. Last year was supposed to be a mid-first round pick. Everyday this draft looks deeper and deeper with players like Jordan highlighting the second round.
57. Indiana (DAL) - Scottie Reynolds
Just another one of the many combo gaurds in this year's draft. I'm really not sure how to rank them all yet so he might rise to be a mid-second in this mock later on.
58. Orlando - Luke Harangody
One of the most unconventional, ugliest styles of play I have ever seen. Hits his jump shots, but doesn't have a complete follow-through, a good rebounder despite his height.... Has really short arms....really, really short arms.
59. LA Lakers - Andy Rautins
Great shooter, decent passer but can do little else. No ability to drive and create for teammates. A good candidate for the triangle offense.
60. Phoenix (CLE) - - Jerome Dyson
Another tweener guard.
--------------------------
The Bubble
---------------------------
Not Entering (based on rumors, assumptions and my gut feeling):
(Lottery 2011) - Jan Vessley 6-11 P/F
Has been rising quickly on mock-drafts lately. Is not the prototypical European big-man like Mehmot Okur and Dirk Nowitzki, is touted to be a very physical player.
(Lottery-Mid 1st 2011) - Elias Harris 6-7 S/F
I'm starting to warm up on Harris. I think he has the right tools (mentally and physically) to become a good player, and he is in the right place to develop some more skills.
(Mide-Late 1st 2011)- JaJuan Johnson
He is long and has impressed me with the way he is leading a high ranked Purdue team. He is a good rebounder, and anticipates shots very well to get up and block them. Johnson also has a respectable shooting stroke which should really help his draft prospects.
(Mid-Late 1st 2011) - Jordan Crawford
Had a great year scoring the ball, but his stock right now is low (mid-first, early 2nd). Returning to school likely won't hurt his stock much (no more than Craig Brackins) but it could also help him work his way into the mid first.
(Mid-Late 1st 2011) - Jamine Peterson
Very good rebounder (11 per game) for his size (6-6). Has the potential to add a lot of muscle to his frame. An extremely good jumper. Quick in the post but still needs some work on his shooting (34% from college 3), some minor adjustments could make him an inside-out threat at power forward. He has had a pair of 20+ rebound games this year. Will most likely stay in school in order to make himself into a first round pick.
(Late 1st - Early 2nd) - Jimmer Fredette
Is he a steal? Is a beneficiary of stat inflation from the system he plays in? Fredette has put up amazing numbers and if he keeps it up in March look for his stock to rise. He is a fantastic shooter and can light up any team. Shoots an amazing 93% from the free-throw line and 44% from 3. Needs to improve his defense. Crafty with the ball, beats his man often because of his great footwork.
(Early 2nd 2011) - Kyle Singler
Savvy player, good jump shot for a power forward but he is short and a somewhat limited athlete. Too slow to play small forward and I don't think he'll be a stellar power forward either, but he could end up being a decent role player similar to an Austin Croshere.
(Early 2nd 2011) - Gavin Edwards
The anchor of UConn's defense. Very good shot blocker and a great athlete. High basketball IQ. Phenomenal free-throw shooter for a power forward (80%).
(Mid 2nd 2011) - Kenneth Faried
An energy player stuck in-between positions much like Renaldo Balkman and Ryan Gomes. Could be a nice guy to have on the bench though.
(Mid 2nd 2011) - Vladimir Dasic
A Draft and stash candidate. This might become a popular route the year before the new CBA kicks in.
(Late 2nd 2011) - Hamady Ndiaya
Is amazingly strong. Great rebounder and dominating shot-blocker, but he has very little skill on the offensive end.
(Late 2nd 2011)- Tim Abromitas
One of the purest shooters I have ever seen. Quick, smooth release, nothing shaky. Outside of his jump-shot he really isn't anything special. He's a bit slow to play small forward, and too light to play power forward. I see him as a Steve Novak type player.
(Late 2nd 2011) - Andrew Oglivy
Fundamental player. Big. Was predicted to be a mid first round pick in last year's draft but his stock is dropping with this year's strong crop of players.

Washington is picking 30th since they have Cleveland's pick. Bucks and Bulls have a first round pick swap. Bucks get the Bulls pick if it is 11 or higher.
Trade S. Jackson soon. NJ seems like a nice place for him.

Why does Minny take Turner, Warren, Manny Harris and Armon Johnson (twice). That's three SG and a combo guard type, only one of whom (Turner) would likely be considered BPA where they were picked.

My thoughts:
-Manny Harris won't sniff the 1st round.
-Warren's stock has seriously slipped, he'll go much later if he declares.
-Ebanks looks to be a few spots higher, and Harris a few spots lower.
As for my team, Detroit, this draft looks realistic. I'm hoping we grab some more dynamic players, but Aldrich and Pondexter are realistic targets.

Re: 2010 Mock Pre-Lotto (1st and 2nd round---3/9)
I've fixed some problems with this mock but it is still in progress (next is adding Dexter Pittman).
I have to disagree on Harris. He has great potential and a smooth style. I think he is going to be a very good pro. Warren was supposed to be top 5 (at the beginning of the year), I think that I have where he'll go pretty close - and if he drops to where Miami drafts I don't think that there is any way he goes lower. I can't stand Ebanks, he is a whiner and an over-rated defender, but he does have great potential just because of his body.

If you're going to update it, shouldn't you update the draft order?

I am going to wait to do the order until the season is over because it is changing almost daily. It is current as of about three days ago, but it won't be again soon.

I've got everything in the first round updated, just have to fix the order in the second round a little bit.

Ekpe Udoh would definitely be an interesting pick for the Jazz. Great intangibles, excellent passer, great ball handler, emerging scoring ability from perimeter and paint, lots of shot blocking. Definitely a major possibility if Johnson, Monroe, and Aldrich are off the board. Hopefully the Jazz get the 8th pick and have Johnson fall to them.

I'm really hoping for Monroe or Johnson as well (if we don't move up), but if anything Udoh can do some of the same things on offense.

Love the Warrior picks. Cousins is the most talented and most ready to compete in the NBA imo. Favors would be my 2nd choice and Monroe my "S#!T well we gotta draft someone" pick.
And LOL at Whiteside over Favors. Whiteside has the highest bust potential of any player.

I don't know if your talking about Raduljica and bad defense, or the Bucks drafting another center, so I will try and address both.
I. Defense
Miroslav plays 27 minutes per game in the Adriatic league. It is fairly competitive (not as much as Euroleague of course, but many of the players will see action there too). He averages .3 blocks per game, and .6 steals per game which isn't exactly stellar considering the competition he faces, the time he plays, and his size.
II. A center to the Bucks
The Bucks really have no one behind Bogut, and with him down the only decent center you have is Kurt Thomas. Miroslav may or may not be the best player at this point in the draft, but if he has a chance of panning out then it is a low-risk, high reward pick. Chances are high that he may stay over seas for a couple of years (much like Tomic for the Jazz) so I also have them picking Jordon. If the draft went the way I have it going now the Bucks could drastically improve their front court.

I'm with you on this. None of the second round centers are exactly what the Bucks are looking for. All of them are offensive centers only and too slow of foot to be more than a defensive liability on the court.
At 47, Stevenson isn't worth the pick for the Bucks.
Draft express after talking to NBA teams took Manny Harris off his two round mock draft. There is something the scouts don't like about him. It wouldn't surprise me if he was picked, but it should be in the latter part of the second.

For the Bucks in the First:
Patterson, Vesely, and Sanders would probably be the choice in that order depending on availability. They may also take a wing prospect, but the PFs are much better values.
37 - Elliot Williams, Jordon Crawford (basically the best available athletic wing player)
later second - take a flyer on Charles Garcia, Trevor Booker, or Sylven Landesberg (basically best available upside prospect)
Trade S. Jackson soon. NJ seems like a nice place for him.
