Was I justified?

Post#1 » by supertruck97 » Thu Jan 24, 2008 2:20 am

As commish, I just vetoed this deal:

7th place team Gives: Gerald Wallace

6th Place team Gives: Nocioni + Felton

7th Place team drops: Azubuike

WW Fodder for a top 25 player. I had to veto it...

Raymond Felton is not fodder. I would say no, you weren't justified. Obviously '7th place' is getting the better player. No one is going to deny that. But it's not like the the last place team was trading it's best player. This is a playoff team who obviously thought this trade would help his chances.

Unless you suspect collusion or if the league is adament you veto it, trades should rarely, if ever be vetoed.

Rankings based on Std Cats on Basketball Monster:

GWall: 36

Nocioni: 120
Felton: 140

Somehow, I don't see that as being close enough for an explanation.

yea that should be vetoed, Wallace should be able to get you a PG like Deron Williams or Billups.

I don't know why people feel it's nessessary to veto trades. The two parties agree on the trade, that should be enough. If there's no evidence, or even suspicion of collusion then it shouldn't be vetoed.

It's not your responsibility to protect the other managers from making stupid moves. That's up to them. It's pretentious to say 'even though you WANT to do this trade, I'm not going to allow it because I wouldn't do it'. Want to avoid people making stupid moves? Know the leagues you're in. Don't play public leagues.

Can you imagine someone vetoing a trade you agreed to? What a slap in the **** face.

Felton gives assists ... and owners who have top PGs usually aren't willing to give them up. Assists just aren't easy to come by.

BTW, After a quick call to both managers, I have decided to allow the trade. I still think it's an awful deal for the guy giving up Wallace, but he wants to do it, so I'm going to let him.

It's not as simple as looking at player values. You have to take into account team fit, depth, and type of league. Depending on how the rosters of each team are made up, it could make a lot of sense for one team to give up Wallace (and drop Azubuike) to pick up stats in other areas. When I try to evaluate a trade, I look at it by asking if team A and team B are making moves that might improve themselves? Even if the value of the players are unbalanced, if you can see a possiblility for both teams benefiting from the trade (and one team might benefit a lot more), then I don't see reason to veto. In a case like this, if as commissioner, I had the sole veto power, I would actually check with the 7th place team with why they are making the trade and if they can give a somewhat understandable reason, I'd pass the trade.
