2nd round: Josh Smith or Deron Williams?

Post#1 » by jobber99 » Tue Oct 14, 2008 6:00 pm

Hi,
got the 10th pick in a 12-person Y! league, snake-draft which means i get the 10th pick and then the 15th pick.
i'm thinking that i can probably get Allen Iverson with the 1st round selection, at least ensuring a quality PG. thinking that with the 2nd pick, both josh smith and deron williams (or maybe even steve nash) will be around.
thoughts? opinions? josh smith gets a ton of blocks, and would allow me to counter-act a small with a big in the 2nd round, but if i get AI (who is PG/SG eligible) and deron williams, i'd have a pretty swell backcourt and won't need to be hunting for assists in later rounds.

I'd say Iverson has a much better chance of still being around then Deron Williams. And I'd take them both well ahead of Josh Smith.

I like D-Will. Others might like the well rounded game of J-Smoove but I prefer to get assists out the way since there are only a handful of point guards like D-Will. He did shot close to 50% on field goals, hovered around 40% from threes, and averaged a steal every game like season. So your getting somebody that is not totally one-dimensional.

you're right. AI might still be around on the way back, and having 10.5 assists a game is a great stat.

I'm on the other side of the fence particularly with Yahoo leagues. Blocks are hard to come by assists much easier. I like to have top players in the block and stls cat's. You can get assists from other positions or just wait to later in the draft.

According to Yahoo avg draft position:

Calderon 28.3
Kidd 39.3
Mo Williams 52.2
Devin Harris 56.9
Andre Miller 63.4
Mike Bibby 80.9
TJ Ford 82.8

These are guys that you can get in the 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th rd of your draft. It's more likely you will find a dependable assist guy later in the draft with consistent playing time than someone who will get you 2 blks a game with consistent playing time in the 6th or 7th rd of your draft......
I'm so tired of the typical......

I say forget about Iverson and take both Deron and Josh Smith if you can.

Ignore the above poster. He just has a ridiculous bias against AI...Don't you Travis.

AI/Josh Smith would be a terrific combo, but I have a feeling Deron is going to be gone before you can even pick him, so you're kinda stuck with AI and Smith...

However, if at all possible I would go for Deron above AI, just cuz Deron gets you better percentages, and more assits over AI's superiority in steals and points. Either way, you can't go wrong with either one, but if I had the choice I would choose Deron over AI. The decision is tough though, because with AI, you will be dominant in steals especially if you take Josh Smith afterwards. And like a poster above said, steals and blocks are harder to come by than assists...

Steals are hard to come by... but blocks aren't very hard to get. There's a few always on the waiver, block-specialists, that you can always pick up that don't contribute anywhere else though.

I'd say Iverson and Deron from that group.

Smith's stats have taken a hit after Bibby trade,I rate Deron as a sure fire top-20 pick whereas Smith in my book is top-25/30 range.

Also I'd say you may draft a center like Camby(or Brand if he falls) at 10 and combine it with Deron or AI.

LOL, so after all that, you basically agree with me.

Take Deron over AI, and take Smith to get your steals and blocks.

Thanks for coming out Ramu.

I agree here. Josh Smith provides Blocks, is pretty decent with Steals and rebounding. Deron shoots a decent FG% and provides very solid Assists.
