OT - Would you consider these rule/stat changes?

Post#1 » by Anatomize » Wed Jan 25, 2012 1:52 am

I was having this discussion the other day.. would you guys add this to the NBA? It could very well effect records if it were to happen since assist numbers would likely double in the first suggestion.

1. Say I pass the ball to a teammate for an open basket, he gets fouled and misses the shot but goes to the line, shouldn't that be an assist? After all, the basket was set up entirely by the passer in that scenario.

This one is a little bit more controversial

2. If I get a strip off an opposing player, it hits their leg and goes out of bounds. Isn't that the same as your team recovering it and going the other way? In this scenario, shouldn't that be counted as a steal even though you didn't get your hands on the ball? If you consider a play where I strip an opposing player, but a different teammate picks up the ball, I still get credit for the steal; so why can't the same be said if your team gains a possession because you stripped the ball and it went out of bounds off their player?

I'm going to guess this conversation came about while you were watching a player on your fantasy team?

For the 1st one, some people may argue the person who draws the foul should get the full credit without being assist. But at the end, assists are not scoring chances, so it makes no difference how you count toward this. The only problem is, does it count when he missed both free throws?

For the 2nd one, if the shot clock never changes, it shouldn't be a turnover. If you throw at someone and go out of bounce, and opponent got a new shot clock, then the shot clock became meaningless. So I would say NO to this.

a forced turnover stat should be made.

1) As mentioned there is the problem of missed or made free throws. How about a new stat for completed passes?

2) I thought that was a steal.
