Steal of a trade?

is it just me, or did I completely fleece this guy?

I sent:
Jason Terry
Leandro Barbosa

I got:
Al Jefferson

and picked up Antonio Daniels.

I know Terry and Barbosa are valuable, but Jefferson is a 20-10 guy.

Tough to say IMO.

Jefferson is the BPA, but that could be argued.

Terry and Barbosa are definitely top-50 guys.

If your team was guard-heavy, then this is a nice one. If not, it's not the best trade value-wise

VERY guard heavy

(had Terry, Wade, R. Brewer, Barbosa, Ginobili, K. Martin)

Two cats.

Jefferon is ranked 34th right now. Barbosa is 42nd and Terry is 29th. I think it's safe to say you didn't come close to fleecing this guy.

Point take about their rankings. A couple reasons I made this deal though, and why I felt so good about it:

-I needed to solidify my front line with low block, high rebound players. I have decided to ditch blocks, and now have a frontline rotation of:

Al Harrington
C. Boozer
Al Jefferson

Imo thats the perfect front line to ditch blocks with.

-Also, Our waiver wire has been really deep this year, and I really wanted a roster spot to rotate some of the guys on "hot streaks" in and out of my team. As it was my worst player was Barbosa or Harrington: hardly cuttable, but both maddeningly inconsistent.

also Stanford, what rankings did you go off of?

Yahoo.

Basketball monster has Terry at 37 and Barbosa at 51. They have Jefferson at 32.

Again, if this helps your team specifically, fine. I'm not going to argue your logic. But you in no way 'fleeced' the guy.

Stanford, not to be contrary, but Yahoo's "Big Board" has Terry down at 48, Barbosa at 44.

Jefferson is at 25.

Again, looking back at your analysis, I absolutely agree that I did not "fleece" him. While I still feel very good about it's impact on my team, I can see how from your perspective it is anything but a steal for me.

Those aren't real rankings. Those are Brandon Funstons subjective take on who would be drafted where if the draft started today. Ask 1000 different people their top 50 and you'll get 1000 different answers. It really doesn't mean a lot.

sure, thats a given.

and I'm more inclined to agree with basketball monster than Yahoo personally. Which do you prefer?

Well the yahoo rankings are not the big board rankings. They have their own rankings are theyre 100% based on stats. Nothing subjective. (Same with bballmonster)

I hate using rankings for anything really. They tend to over value threes and don't take position into account. They're good when comparing players in a trade, but I would never swear by them, like some people on this board. I would take my own subjective view on players 10 times out of ten over rankings based on previous stats.

If I were to pick though, I guess I would pick basketball monster, just because they don't weigh threes as much (or so it seems).

right, i understand the difference between the big board rankings and Yahoo's stat ones.

However I didn't realize they overvalued threes so much, good to keep in mind.

I agree you have to analyze players yourself, especially if you are using a team specific strategy (ditching a cat, etc.)

The thing is, three pointers are the only stat that directly affects another. You hit a three, you get three point. You get a steal, that's all you get. You get an assist, that's all you get. I assume that's why they'd weighed higher than the other stats.

By the way, I'm talking only from assumptions I've made. I've never seen the formula for either ranking system. I've just found that three pointers have been over valued in the past. In may not be fact.

I often use basketballmonster.com, although that's not that accurate. Nothing could be so.

Jefferson's ranked [33] + AD [113]

JET [41] + Barbs [54]

Lateral at best
