top fbb players this season

Post#1 » by KalElen » Mon Jan 28, 2008 9:18 pm

the list is made using my new formula(here it is used for standard 9 cats, but some other popular cats will be supported too). i intend to use it at the fbb site i'm making(it will probably be up some time in the march). it's not perfect as it doesn't take into account games played, injury issues, name-power or league size(i plan on modifying it so that it does take into account league size) but i think it is great for getting realistic value of players based on their per game averages so far(27.1'08.). so without further ado here it is:

Dwight Howard @ 47?

You're kidding, right?

Geez, if you get him on your team ... change your team into an 8-cat team, and dump every good FT shooter on your team for others in the same range, with bad FTs. FT%s are overvalued IMO, especially in H2H.

Fair, although I don't like Deron in the top-20 and Ginobili at 21. Manu's not going to have that true value in a league.

Josh Howard also deserves a bit more love IMO.

Ray Allen's a bit luck to be at 34 I'd also have to say.
Peja at 50 is far too high.
Gordon at 59 despite an awful season?
Korver at 86 is too high

See the pattern?
I know that 3PTM technically also contributes towards your points total, but I think too much emphasis has been placed on it.

BTW, it'll be nice to see your website when it is finished.

Rankings, basketball tools, articles/opinions, links, and a nice website layout are all you need!

I to am excited to see your website

I am a little curious why Amare is so high. I don't recall seeing him at two anywhere else... whats the rationale for that?

Only in H2H. You're not going to win a league sporting a '1' in FT%. It's just not going to happen.

By the way, this isn't some objective 'where you should draft xxx' list. It's a ranking based on an actual formula. You'd be hard pressed to convince me that Dwight Howard is anything but a 35-50 ranked player right now.

as stanford said this is based on formula, name power is not a factor. it's calculated for 9 cat leagues, if you want to tank one cat that's your right, when the site is up you'll be able to choose which cats you want to use for ranking, but this is based on all 9 cats. he is 10th worst player in turnovers and the worst in ft% among fantasy worthy players by my formula

Not to mention he gives you almost nothing in assists.

first he has 2 huge positives: he is 10th in blocks and blocks are extremely valuable and he is no1 contributor in fg%. other reason he is up there is he has no negatives in 3 cats where player can hurt you(fg%, ft% and to) unlike most other top players. very few players don't hurt you significantly anywhere, amare's ft% is above average(not by much, but still above) his tos are in check (he is 77th worst)

ok, I can't argue with that analysis

So how soon are you looking at starting the site?

this is also true, but many other players don't contribute in certain cats. d-how would be great in 7cat leagues(with no tos and ft%) maybe even no1, i don't know, but he hurts you badly in two cats and that's the main reason. my formula penalizes those who hurt you anywhere

It's something general - I think you are overrating 3PTM on the whole.

No, it's the general correlation between assists and TOs. If I'm taking on 3+ turnovers I want a decent amount of assists in return. That's what I meant. That's why I didnt mention three pointers.

Also, we can't argue your rankings because theyre not objective. Post the weight of each cat and I'm sure we'll have a nice little discussion about that.

I personally think Gerald and Duncan should move up as well as a couple of other players. Minor shifts here and there. Pretty good though.

acctually they are objective. i didn't just pick a weight for every cat based on my own opinion/experience. weights are not fixed and they depend on few things: production of the players that are included on the list(over the period requested, which in this case is season up to 27.1), number of players on the list(400+), number of players per team(in this example i took 13) etc. to answer ys as well here all cats are equal. when ranking players every player gets a number of points for every cat and then i add up all of his points for his final score. sum of points of all players for each and every cat is the same. a 3 pointer is 2nd most valuable among 7 cumulative stats(per point of production) and that's a fact based on numbers

So there's not a static formula used for every player?

yes there is static formula, but there are no static weights. they are calculated based on rank settings within the formula. if you ran the formula on 400 players and 13 players per team and on 300 players and 14 players per team you get different results and different weights for every cat because cat weights are recalculated for new settings

I'm actually trying to challenge that notion in a competitive 12-team, 9-cat roto league. I ended up with a team whose top players are currently Lebron, Duncan, Baron, J. Rich, and DHoward. You can probably guess that I have a '1' in FT% and a '2' in TOs (surprisingly enough, as I expected a '1' there too). I'm also averaging 11 or more in the other 7 categories and have been fluctuating around 80 to 82 points total for the past month, currently about 5-6 points ahead of the 2nd place team. (Side note: being a competitive, knowledgeable league, the key to how this team was assembled is that I drafted Howard in the 6th round and I traded KG for Lebron once I realized my FT% and TO's were messed up.)
