RealGM Mock Draft Challenge - Writersblock FTW!!!

Posted: Sat Jul 18, 2009 4:14 pm
by Curtis Lemansky
As the free agency is winding down and new season is approaching, we will conduct a mock draft for the upcoming season with fellow fantasy board gm's. The purpose of it will be to give some idea to other fantasy gm's about the value of players for the year and to see how the drafts will roughly shape up. I tried to get the best crop of gm's we have in our board and hopefully it will both fun and helpful for us and for others in preparing for the upcoming season.

Each gm will post their picks and give a brief explanation of why they made that pick and roughly what kind of stats they will be expecting from that particular player.

Sending lists is strongly encouraged (you can post your reasoning behind your pick afterwards when you are available if you make your pick via list)

Please use this thread only for posting picks(and your reasoning behind the pick). For all the other comments, please use the mock draft discussion thread. - http://www.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic. ... 9&t=929117

Settings:

-Yahoo
-12 hours per pick & No trades allowed
-Teams: 14
-Scoring Type: Roto
-Roster Positions: PG, PG, SG, SG , G , SF, SF, PF, PF, F, C, C, UT, UT
-Stat Categories: FG%, FT%, 3PTM, PTS, REB, AST, ST, BLK, TO

The league will run on yahoo. Since there are no bench spots/no trades/no transactions, you set up your lineups once at the beginning of the year and then you are good for the entire year. So the “league” doesnt require usual fantasy basketball daily/weekly maintenance.

First Pick:

Chris Paul

I don't think there's much to say about this pick...except that

1. At least I get to draft him in one league, even if it's just a mock draft league
2. I've always wanted to settle the debate: Does the team with the first pick, and arguably the best player, end up winning the league (my hunch is NO).

Lebron James

Do I really need to give any explanation? I probably would take him with the first overall pick too. More defense, less prone to injury, less likely to have an "off" season.

3. kevin durant

or me durant is nobrainer top 5 player. cp3 and lbj are 1st tier. 2nd tier would be wade, durant and granger. wade looks like an obvious choice here, but he played with a huge chip on his shoulder last year and had a career year. while i believe he will be in top 5 again, i don't think he'll be as good. durant's numbers improved when carlesimo was fired and he was moved to sf which is his natural position, so his final stats are deflated a bit. what's more important is that he still has huge upside. i don't think that anyone would be too surprised if by this time next year we're talking about him as of hands down best fantasy player in the league. finally in his 6 years in the league wade has played 61 or less games 3 times, including 51 twice in the last 3 years. he still relies heavily on driving to the hoop which is the main reason behind all those missed games. i'm just not ready to take such injury prone player with 3rd pick when there is such a great alternative available

4: Kobe Bryant

Really tough one; deciding between the 2 obvious ones.
But, Kobe is pretty much as sure of a shot as they come. Best player in NBA.
Always get your points and 3's.
I had to pick him or another; but Kobe has less of a chance of missing 30 games.

5: Dwyane Wade

As crazy as it sounds I hard a hard time deciding, but eventually I did what I had to do. Wade, he gives me more ast, stl and he basically a nice pick at #5. Granger could prove me wrong, though.

#6 Granger

There comes a time in every draft where you just get lucky. This is that time, Granger should have gone third or 4th and here he is at 6. Lucky me, the man gives you a little bit of everything which is what you want with your first roto pick. Love me some threes

#7 Dirk Nowitzki <3

This is kind of obvious. Nowitzki is a super-solid fantasy player with great consistency. I was most impressed with him this playoffs just after his girlfriend incident broke out, he went out to play and put up amazing numbers against the Nuggets, which have one of the thoughest frountcourts in the league. If he stays healthy as he always is, we can expect a very nice fantasy season from him, especially in roto.

# 8 - Amare Stoudamire

I was between three players but decided to go with high risk/high reward. With Shaq out of the picture and with Gentry implementing SSOL offense back,he should get more touches on offense and more rebounds on defense. Plus his shot blocking numbers will be probably around +1.5 level.
A return to his 07/08 form is not out of question when he was the 2nd best player in fantasy basketball. He will bring his usual great percentages with tons of attempts;give 23/9/2 and hopefully around 2.5 spg+bpg. He carries some injury risk nevertheless I expect him to have a monster season in a contract year.

9. Brandon Roy
Gonna go with a legitimate star here in Roy. Not only is he now more durable (after early-career knee worries), his fantasy game moved to another level last season as he ensconsed himself with the NBA elite. At time of selection, Roy was in a contract year, as he hadn't signed an extension with Portland.
2009/10 Projection: He was always looked upon as a 9-cat player, and outside of blocks, it's exactly what he is. Expect him to stuff the stat-sheet once more, joining the 20/5/5 club, whilst only committing a couple of turnovers, grabbing a steal, hitting a three, and once again boasting supreme shooting percentages.

10 - KG

It was down to KG or Bosh for me. I have a rule for drafting that I use pretty exclusively. I pick 3 bigs with my first 4 picks. I like to get my big cats in early as the pickings gets pretty thin pretty fast. There are still a couple good bigs on the board in Bosh and Gasol and Jefferson. I expect all 3 to go in the first round.

I choose KG among all these folks because he seems like the surest bet. Jefferson is coming off major surgery and my not be himself for a while, Gasol has to now share the ball with Artest and who knows how many touches Bynum will demand this year. Bosh was my second pick, but, the upside there was about zero as Bosh's game isn't improving and his minutes were allready large.

KG's minutes on the other hand were a paltry 31mpg. I don't see much chance that goes down any this year, and there is some chance it'll go up providing me with upside. KG has been around forever, but, is still relatively in his prime at 33yo.

i believe i can skip east now?

With the first round you have to go BPA.

In my mind, that's Bosh.

I'm going with Pau Gasol here.

He had a great season last year, only bad thing was his blocks dropped. He doesn't hurt me anywhere and I don't expect Bynum to remain healthy. I also wanted to grab a big early.

Re: RealGM Fantasy Board Mock Draft Challenge-Stanford on clock

At 13 I'm going with Al Jefferson.

In my mind, this is the BPA in a roto league. Career highs in blocks, FT% and points last year while keeping the rebounds at 11 and the steals hovering around one. I'm a little worried about Al coming back from the knee injury, and if Pau or Bosh were still on the board, I would have gone there, but he's the best big left on the board and with another comparable pick coming up soon, it's an easy decision.

I think it's fair to expect some sort of readjustment period for Al, so I don't think he'll set another career high in points. 21ppg, 11rpg, 1.5apg, 1.6bpg, 0.8spg, 50fg%, 75ft%*, 03pm, 2tpg.

*I'm hoping this continues to trend upwards. There's no reason for me to think it won't.

Deron Williams and Gerald Wallace

Boozer's possible departure can boost D-Will's value and G-Wall is a great all-around fantasy player, love him.

sorry for the short explanation. I don't have enough time.

Re: RealGM Fantasy Board Mock Draft Challenge-Stanford up

This pick I'll take Chauncey Billups. There's a real drop off after Deron IMO, and it starts with me (or GWill the previous pick). I might not have made this pick if it weren't for the initial Jefferson pick, but since I did, I felt his stats fit well against Al's. Besides, I think it's a real luxery to start your draft off with a C and point guard.

Billups was a top fantasy player 20 player in Denver. He'll give me threes, steals, assist and FT% - what I lacked with the Jefferson pick. I was also considering Butler, Nash and Calderon here. Durability and consistancy gave Billups the edge. I'm expecting. 17.5ppg, 3rpg, 6.5apg, 1.3spg, 2 3pm, 2.1tpg, 0.1bpg, 42fg%, 91ft%.

Re: RealGM Fantasy Board Mock Draft Challenge-Stanford up

I wanted Billups here but I'll go with Steve Nash. Under Porter, Nash's offense significantly decreased. However, after Gentry took over, Nash's numbers increased to 18.7 points and 1.6 threes on 54.8% FG shooting. With the return of the run and gun system Nash thrives in and the Shaq trade, I like Nash here.

Tough call between Nash and Butler- I expect a huge year out of Butler and I'm a huge fan of his, but I also wanted a point guard.

Looks like my team will be named, 'The Hasbeens'. I'm going old school again wiht my second round pick.

Shawn Marion.

I'm of the opinion that Marion will see a resurgance of production in moving to Dallas. He also brings me those bigman stats that I crave in the early rounds. I think he probably would slide a few more spots in most leagues, but, he's the guy I want and I can't trade down so I take him a bit early.

Well you guys skipped accidentally Skip but thank god you didnt draft the guy he wanted so here it goes:

Skip picks: Rashard Lewis at 17

again, in the first few rounds i always take BPA
Lewis is all about high efficiency and has injury free history
-playing it safe in the first few rounds is always a good idea, if you go for the home run and your guy is a bust, your season can be over. why take a huge gamble when you have so many blue chip guys available?

Re: RealGM Fantasy Board Mock Draft Challenge-Youngstar up

This will be a pick I am sure to regret, but here goes:

#20 Jason Kidd

Why this could be a horrible pick: A guy gets picked 20th and can barely score 9 points a game! Can you rely on a 37-year-old to bring home the title?

Why this could be a total steal? Outside of points, Kidd is elite everywhere else. Treys will be there, he rebounds for a guard, assists will be top-tier, steals, he can even block, and TO will be kept low. FG% was a worry, but less shots should mean higher accuracy.

2009-10 Projection: The minutes will be there, and the Mavs will need him. They got deeper in adding Marion, but he's still the only genuine distributor on that team. So suffice to say he will get a lot of clock. 9 points, 1.5 three-pointers, 5-6 rebounds, 8-9 assists, nearing 2 steals, up to half a block, 2.5 TO (at the most), upwards of 40% FG, 80% FT
