when's it time to cut players loose?

it's only a week in but I see a lot of panic moves (in one league, someone dropping blake griffin for skip to my lou). but how long are you guys waiting before hitting the drop button?

imo the biggest culprit here, for many many people, is the birdman. without blocks he's absolutely useless...

Andre Miller is my tough call. He's doing nothing at this point, but you have to think he'll start getting some minutes over Blake soon.

It's hard to explain... But in general don't get too attached to the guys you drafted in the later rounds. 5-7 games is probably enough for you to get a good idea of what the player is going to give you in the immediate future, but it's never set in stone.

One thing that I do early on in the season is look at minute trends, and try to pinpoint emerging timeshares as coaches are hammering out their rotations.

Sometimes you just make a bad pick, so instead of hoping that a player turns it around you need to cut your losses and move on (see: Anthony Morrow*).

*Anthony Morrow type players (Ramon Sessions in years past) are always interesting, if they're given minutes they produce but if they don't get their minutes they're easily replaceable. With guys like that I think it's best to leave them on the waiver wire and try to jump on them when "it's their time".

I agree with everything said except your comment about someone "panicking" by dropping B. Griffin. I think anyone would be crazy to hold on to almost any player for 6 weeks. I would easily drop Griffin for someone who is going to produce for 4-6 weeks and then grab him closer to his return.

On the topic of Birdman, what is everyone's thoughts on him? Right now you can argue that someone like Ben Wallace or Samuel Dalembert has more value than him, so I'm considering dropping Andersen if he doesn't turn things around in the next 2-3 games.

I've already dropped the birdman. I'm loaded with bigs and he's not doing a damn thing for me. My current dilema revolves around dropping Augustine (he's playing well tonight at least) for Dre Miller who was recently dropped.

Even after Augustin's good game I'd still look to upgrade from him but (at least that's what I'm doing, I have my eyes on Nate Robinson and will monitor how Delonte West plays)...

I think I'd keep Augustin. At least there's a chance that even in limited minutes he'll give you some 3's. Miller will only be good if Nate McMillian gets off his high horse and starts the damn guy.

Personally, I wouldn't DJ Augustine. They are struggling to score points right now. Augustine could be their best scorer beside Gerald Wallace, who is not a natural scorer. That means Augustine shall get a lot of touches on the offensive end. :D

All depends on the player you are thinking of dropping and how long they are out for

How about Harden anyone? He's averaging 15.7 minutes a game, Any chance that increases, or he starts even? I got him 124th, 10th round in a 12 team league, and I'm hesitant to drop him.

Given that Thabo just got an extension I don't see Harden starting anytime soon. The Thunder have also started off fairly well so I don't see them tinkering with their lineup...

I already dropped TJ FORD. Now I'm thinking of dropping Chalmers. I always take PGs that could bust out in the late rounds, usually at least one works out and the rest I drop.

I don't know I've been happy with Chalmers play, yeah his threes are down for now but his steals are still there, I'm not competing in assists though so maybe that's why I can stomach him...

A bit concerning is how his FGA per game have dropped by about 2.6, it's only been 4 games but Chalmers doesn't seem to be involved in the offense right now (which is pretty funny considering he's the Heat's point guard)

I just dropped Fernandez after he posted games of 1 and then 3 points... He was doing a good job bringing in steals, but I can stomach any downgrade in that for a player who contributes in more than one category.
