The Donovan exit earned MIA the following pick swap from Orlando in June:
2008 first round draft pick from Orlando
Miami has the right to swap its own 2008 1st round pick with Orlando's own 2008 1st round pick (top 14 protected). If Miami does not swap its own 2008 1st round pick with Orlando's own 2008 1st round pick (top 14 protected), then Miami shall receive Orlando's own 2008 2nd round pick and $500,000 cash. [Miami - Orlando, 6/7/2007]
However, MIA traded their 2008 to MIN in October.
I can't imagine that MIA can retain the right to their pick to ORL, but my question is .. what happened to the pick swap?
1. Did it go to MIN to protect the value of their trade, where MIN would have the right to swap the MIA pick, up the ORL second rounder?
2. Does MIA keep it in an altered fashion, so that while they lose the right to swap it, they retain the ORL second rounder because they certainly won't be making that swap.
3. Does the pickswap become voided, so ORL gets to keep their second.
Also complicating this .. The 2008 MIA pick is lottery protected, so they probably will retain it in 2008 anyway.
Anyone got any info on this?

Based on the above, Miami would receive Orlando's 2008 2nd round pick and $500,000.

I see it this way, with 4 possible scenarios:
MIA in lottery, ORL in lottery - each team keeps pick, MIA gets ORL's 2nd rounder + cash, MIN waits
MIA in playoffs, ORL in lottery - ORL keeps pick (swap is protected), MIA gets ORL's 2nd rounder + cash, MIN gets Heat pick
MIA in lottery, ORL in playoffs - MIA keeps pick, MIA gets ORL's 2nd rounder + cash, MIN waits
and now the tricky one...
MIA in playoffs, ORL in playoffs - with MIA in the playoffs, MIN gets their pick. By not swapping, no matter whose pick is originally higher, MIA gets ORL's 2nd rounder and cash. (Doesn't matter to the Heat, who lose their 1st either way, so they should opt to forego the swap regardless of draft order. If they have a worse pick and swap, they get nothing while only Minny benefits.) ORL keeps their 1st pick.
So, oddly enough, no matter which circumstance occurs:
ORL will keep their pick.
MIA will get ORL's 2nd rounder + cash. They keep their pick if it's in the lottery.
MIN will get the Heat's pick if MIA is in the playoffs.
That's it. Anyone find a flaw in my logic?

Yes. It isn't realistic.
There's really only ONE possible scenario: MIA in lottery, ORL in playoffs
Miami is not going to get within sniffing distance of a playoff berth. Their record is awful and there's no way they play at a pace the rest of the way to even get to .500 - that's just ludicrous to postulate for a team that sucks so bad. (To get to .500, they'd have to instantly become a 33-10 team, which would be a better pace than every team so far except Boston. Ummmm no.)
And Orlando will make the playoffs. They are too talented, too well coached, and D Howard is a beast of a big man. They are in such safe territory that even a fairly serious injury shouldn't derail them. The East is so weak, they should coast to a 1st round home court series.
So you might as well throw all the other what-if's in the crapper.

Rather than throw them in the crapper, let's treat them as hypotheticals in an effort to better understand the workings of the CBA. God knows you've presented unlikely hypotheticals in the past FGump, for just this very reason.
I agree with loserX's first three scenarios. As for the final scenario where both ORL and MIA are in the playoffs, in this case Miami doesn't have the right to swap first round picks with Orlando because they already owe their pick to Minnesota. So Minnesota gets Miami's first round pick and Miami gets Orlando's second round pick and $500K.
So loserX's conclusion is correct.

That makes sense. Thanks for the clarification!
