Clippers cap room

Post#1 » by Three34 » Fri Jul 25, 2008 7:51 pm

I'm trying to calculate where they're at now. This is what I've got for their salary figure.

Baron Davis: $11,200,000, ish.
Marcus Camby: $10,000,000
Chris Kaman: $9,500,000
Cuttino Mobley: $8,925,000
Tim Thomas: $6,049,400
Eric Gordon: $2,623,200
Jason Hart: $2,484,000
Al Thornton: $1,776,240
Quinton Ross: $1,652,092 (cap hold, unrenounced free agent)
Paul Davis: $893,693 (cap hold, unrenounced free agent)
Nick Fazekas: $886,517 (qualifying offer/caphold, restricted free agent)
Marcus Williams: $886,517 (qualifying offer/caphold, restricted free agent)
Josh Powell: $854,957 (fully unguaranteed)
Mike Taylor: $442,114
DeAndre Jordan: $442,114

Total: $58,615,844

Now this is pretty obviously wrong somewhere. They just had a offer sheet for Azubuike for about $3 million matched by Golden State, and the only salary from the above list to have changed since that time was Jason Hart, who was traded for the $2,000,000 salary of Brevin Knight. So some of the above obviously no longer applies, because they have more cap room than a piddly $75,000.

I'm assuming that Davis and Ross were renounced, quietly. (I say "quietly", because it was announced rather publically than N'Dong, Parker, Singleton Livingston and Dickau were renounced, yet nothing on Ross and Davis. Although Davis WAS left unrestricted.) If that's the case, then the committed salary is down to $56,070,059, (and remember, I'm approximating on Baron.) That is closer, but still not enough for the Azubuike offer sheet.

So, were Davis and Ross renounced, along with either Fazekas, Williams, or both? If not, I fail to see how they signed Azubuike to the offer sheet that they did.

LA can garner a few more dollars under the cap if they additionally waive Josh Powell and renounce Nick Fazekas - but that doesn't appear to be likely. Powell is very economically paid and showed promise in last year's lost season.

Since Azubuike's offer sheet was matched, the Clippers have the right to unrenounce any or all of the three.

If they sign another RFA (like J.R. Smith), and that gets matched too, do they still have the right to un-renounce them?

Since the team must rescind the renunciation within two business days of the match, I don't think that would work. I guess they could unrenounce the players, wait a few days, and renounce them again when they signed a second player to an offer sheet. Then if the second offer sheet was matched, the team could again unrenounce the players.

They should probably do that.

I only ask because, after needlessly signing Eric Gordon to cut roughly half a million out of their cap room, they've gone and traded Brevin Knight for Jason Hart in one fo the most pointless trades in league history, successfully chopping ANOTHER half a million out of their cap room. I'm left wondering quite what the hell they're doing, and what Josh Powell and Nick Fazekas have done to still be there. The Clips could have about $5.2 mil in cap space right now if they'd done things differently, and they wouldn't have lost a significant player to do so. (They might not have lost Fazekas and Powell at all, in fact. It's not like they're going to be involved in huge bidding wars.)

And NOW they cut Josh Powell. Interesting off-season for them.

And then they added Brian Skinner, a step up from Powell.

And now the Clips rescind Fazekas' QO. Assuming Skinner's contract is for the veteran minimum, it looks like the Clips still have a little over $2 million in cap space. Can Sham please confirm this? I love the site BTW.

By my maths, they're at $57,270,115.

Baron Davis: $11,250,000
Marcus Camby: $10,000,000
Chris Kaman: $9,500,000
Cuttino Mobley: $8,925,000
Tim Thomas: $6,049,400
Eric Gordon: $2,623,200
Jason Hart: $2,484,000
Ricky Davis: $2,300,000
Al Thornton: $1,776,240
Brian Skinner: $1,262,275 (it's a two year minimum)
Mike Taylor: $550,000
DeAndre Jordan: $550,000

Total: $57,270,115

Thanks for the info, Sham. Now I'm very confused as to why the Clippers let go of Fazekas.

Second go should be right.

I highly doubt your numbers are off, Sham. Sacraficing a half million in the IMO poorly timed Hart trade didn't make any sense to me either. I guess I'll have to give the Clippers the benefit of the doubt :-?
