min team salary and insurance

Post#1 » by GTO » Tue Jul 28, 2009 4:05 am

If a team is at or near the minimum league salary for their roster, and they trade for a player who is out for the season, would his salary still count toward team salary? I am just thinking that, assuming insurance covers 80% of what's owed to the player, it would be a way for a team to nominally met the minimum but actually is on the hook for less.

Yes, of course they would.

But it you can name me a team who finished the season close to the minimum salary, I then might care that it could happen. I doubt it though.

(The point being that while they might pay less than the minimum themselves, the players being paid would still receive it, which is the point of the minimum. It if there for the PA, not the league.)
