Does anyone have....

Post#1 » by LarryCoon » Sun Nov 22, 2009 5:05 pm

I'm following up on Billy Hunter's recent statement that there's $1.5B less in committed contracts now than in 2005-06. Does anyone here (Sham?) have a contract snapshot from that season, in a form that can easily be used to compute some totals?

So I'm looking for: total commitments for 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 & 2010-11, as those commitments existed in 2005-06.

And by commitments, I mean cap values for regular contracts, waived players, player options and ETOs, but not for team options, partial/non guarantees, or q-offers.

Thanks for any help!

This isn't the answer to your question, but I wrote about the difference in committed salary between October 2008 and October 2009 only recently:

http://www.shamsports.com/content/pages ... n-post.jsp

In the past year, total committed future salaries dropped over $800 million. This doesn't seem to support what Hunter said, since total future committed salary in October 2008 must surely have been at its highest point ever in league history (or at the very least, close to it). It's still an impressive drop, though, so his message rings true.

I'm thinking the impending 2010 free agent market impacted the total future committed salaries both this year and last -- teams have been lining up to have cap room in 2010 for some time, thus lower future salary commitments.

My point is going to be that citing total future salary commitments is a pretty disingenuous way of making your case, if indeed that's what Hunter is doing, since that number is so influenced by external factors.

BTW, if anyone does have a snapshot from 2005-06, you don't even need to filter out TOs, and PG/NGs. After a couple hours' work, I've given up on doing it the hard way, and am just ballparking it with total cap hit.

Perhaps this is what you were doing with the long way, but Patricia's 05/06 data goes to 1/15/06.

Her numbers come to $1,891,704,902

Thanks, but I need future commitments in 2005-06 as well -- i.e., in 2005-06, how much was already committed for 2006-07, 2007-08, etc.

This doesn't have exactly what you're looking for, but perhaps it can help in some other way:
