Stern predicts 2010-11 cap at $56.1M

Post#1 » by Dunkenstein » Fri Apr 16, 2010 9:08 pm

Somehow I think he suspected all along that it wasn't going to be in the $50-53M range. I think he was just scaring the owners and players in an effort to keep contracts lower where possible last season. From what I heard, teams were projecting next season in the $54M range. This should come as a happy surprise to many of them.

This also means that league revenues didn't drop as badly as Stern warned. This is going it make it harder for the owners to say "woe is me" during the upcoming CBA negotiations.

They seem to be simultaneously publicly lessening the extent of the damage of the recession, while also sticking to their guns about the claim that the league has lost $400 million. I have basically no understanding of the situation, but it doesn't seem as though those two can readily co-exist as being true.

I'm sure some of that $400M "loss" is caused by accounting tricks, especially where teams own their own arenas. Then there are the teams that are losing money because their owners are saying "to hell with the luxury tax" and spending whatever they can in an effort to win a championship.

Then there's the group of teams that are losing money because they just suck. Considering the product they put on the floor, how can teams like Minnesota, Washington, New Jersey, New York, etc. expect anybody to pay money to see their games. You can't blame bloated player contracts as the reason these teams are losing money. It's the fault of bad management. Or management that have in some cases decimated their teams based on the dream that they'll have the cap space to land a top free agent next summer.

Hey Sham. I just noticed that you've been named a forum moderator. When did that happen? How come it still says RealGM is the moderator on the Forum main page? Does this mean that when I use words like bollocks, you'll be able to come in and bleep it out?
