nuggets, roster #, salary cap, FA

Post#1 » by windycity00 » Tue Jun 8, 2010 10:57 pm

question: 11 players are under contract next year for denver, you must have 12, but, denver
is over the salary cap, so they cannot sign a free agent, correct?
so how will they get a 12th player, will they be forced to trade a 1 for 2?

They can use one of several exceptions to the salary cap to obtain a player.

They can use the traded player exception to get one or more players from another team(s). Or they could also get a draft pick (like they did last year with Lawson) sending cash considerations or future picks back in return.

They can use the minimum player exception to sign a player to a minimum salary for one or two years.

The can use the Bi-Annual exception to sign a player to a salary of $2.08 million or less in the first year of his contract.

They can use the Mid-Level exception to sign one or more players whose combined salary in the first year of their contracts is less than the amount of the exception (the amount will be set in early July).

So they've got some choices.
