Re: TPE: Najera and Carroll
To oversimplify:
The trade was Dampier, Najera and Carroll for Chandler and Ajinca.
Using the 125% rule, the Mavericks could have acquired Chandler and Ajinca for Dampier alone and it would have been legal. So in a sense, they made two trades:
1) Dampier for Chandler and Ajinca
2) Najera and Carroll for nothing
They therefore get a TPE as a result of the second part.

Not to be nitpicky, but I believe #2 technically would have to be split into
Najera for nothing
Carroll for nothing
since you can't trade multiple players and get a trade exception.

Re: TPE: Najera and Carroll
By my math, this was a slightly more complex trade that was different from each team's perspective.
From Charlotte’s perspective, there were two trades. Najera was acquired using the trade exception it acquired in the Raja Bell trade. Then Chandler and Ajinca were traded for Dampier and Carroll; the trade fits within the 125% + $100k rule with no trade exception created.
From Dallas’ perspective, there were three trades. Carroll was traded for nothing, producing a $4.3 million trade exception. Najera was traded for nothing, producing a $3.0 million trade exception. Then Dampier was traded for Chandler and Ajinca; the trade fits within the 125% + $100k rule with no trade exception created.

Re: TPE: Najera and Carroll
Thanks for the clarification...Najera into Bell's exception makes sense, but i still don't understand how Carrol's TPE was created since he was technically aggregated with Damp?
How can Carroll be traded for "nothing" if Charlotte is over the cap?
How can Carroll be traded for "nothing" if Charlotte is over the cap?

Sorry about the 2 TPEs vs. 1 TPE mix-up...I did say my explanation was oversimplified

Each team gets to look at the trade from its own perspective. Note the excellent analysis that points out that Charlotte essentially made two trades while Dallas made three.
- If the two trades both work for Charlotte, good for Charlotte. Charlotte takes Najera with a TPE; fine. Charlotte trades Chandler and Ajinca for Dampier and Carroll, fine. So the overall trade is legal for Charlotte.
- If the three trades all work for Dallas, good for Dallas. Dallas trades Dampier for Chandler and Ajinca, fine. Dallas trades Najera for nothing, fine. Dallas trades Carroll for nothing, fine. So the overall trade is legal for Dallas.
If it works on both sides individually, the trade is legal, even if their perspective of the trade's mechanics differ.
