I thought there was a 60 day rule on a player being retraded but why were there rumors that Murphy was going to be packaged with favors early on? Is there some stipulation that would allow NJ to trade him before October 11th
Thanks

You are correct that in most cases a team cannot trade a player for two months after receiving him in a trade, if the player is being traded in combination with another player or players. However, this restriction applies only to teams over the salary cap. The Nets are currently under the salary cap.

Are they?
I think that they are technically over right now. According to Sham and others they have maintained their free agent rights to Jarvis Hayes ($2,681,640 cap hold). That in combination with the vet min signings of Joe Smith, Stephen Graham, & Eddie Gill has them with a salary cap of about $60,143,296.
They were obviously under the cap at the time they acquired Troy Murphy in that trade, so perhaps that would nullify the 60 day waiting period.
Edit: BTW, thanks for the info on the Andray Blatche contract.

Re: Troy Murphy
Technically, because of Jarvis Hayes' cap hold, they are over the cap. But if they were going to include Murphy in a multi-player trade, they could easily get under the cap by renouncing Hayes. Sham's numbers don't account for the waiver of Sean May who only had $100K of guaranteed money. And I understand that Eddie Gill was only signed to a Summer Contract which doesn't count against team salary.
Discounting Jarvis Hayes' cap hold, the Nets team salary is currently at $56,107,267, well under the cap.

Re: Troy Murphy
Actually, the two-month rule stated above only applies to players that are acquired pursuant to an Exception. As long as the player acquired in trade is not acquired pursuant to an Exception, the two-month rule will not apply to him in any subsequent trade (even if the team is over the cap at the time of the subsequent trade). The details can be found in Art VII, Sec 6(h).

Re: Troy Murphy
I don't want to start a new thread, but another question regarding a singular player...
Tim Thomas. One day, it was "Mavs trying to void Thomas' contract" and a week or so later, "Dallas officially releases Tim Thomas" and that was it. Was his contract voided? Is there a long drawn out process?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Troy Murphy
As I understand it, Thomas's wife is ill, which is why he missed the latter part of last season. After signing with Dallas this summer, he realized he still needed to be by her side. So Dallas agreed to waive him. He is still listed on their team salary, so that may just show the compassionate side of Mark Cuban and the Dallas organization.

"He is still listed on their team salary"
The above is inaccurate or out of date. Contract was voided with no pay, per ESPN who cited Donnie Nelson for the info.

Thanks for that update. It's nice to have good sources like you to look into things like that. I may ask again in a few months.

Well, less than a month later, I no longer see Tim Thomas listed on shamsports or google docs. Was his contract voided?

Since I last looked in October, Thomas's salary has been removed from Dallas's team salary.
