agent paid on extension?

Post#1 » by The Rebel » Sun Nov 21, 2010 5:51 pm

There is a rumor that Melo's new agents are the ones who do not want him to sign an extension due to the former agent receiving the commission on the extension. Is that really in the cba?

CBA doesn't cover player agent contracts. NBA players association has a standard contract.

His current contract included next season as a player option. If he extends off that it would in effect be keeping the first contract for that season so I think you could safely assume that the first agent would get his cut of that season, as that season was then part of the original deal. But for the rest of the deal, the extended part, it would go to the new agent.
But take this with a grain of salt, I'm definitely not an expert on this.

That is what I always assumed, but wanted to double check, as I guess Sam Smith wrote in his Bulls blog that is is melo's agent that is trying to get him to New York if he signs the extension as they would not make any money on the extension and would want to make that up on endorsements.

If Melo signed the three-year, $65M extension, his previous agent Aaron Goodwin would receive a commission on his salary for next year, since he negotiated the contract which included the early termination option in 2011-12. Melo would have to agree not to exercise the ETO in order to sign the extension. His new agents CAA would receive a commission on the three years of the extension.
