multi-team trades

Can anyone explain how three team trades technically work. Since each team can structure trades differently are multi-team trades actually a series of two team trades where a player could be traded multiple times in the same multi-team deal? If so, does the restriction on immediately trading players received in a trade in an aggregated trade not apply in these situations or does that complicate the trade?

In a 3 or more team trade, players go directly where they end up. A player traded from team 1 to team 3 is never considered to have gone to team 2 within that trade, and there is no reason/advantage for that sort of intermediate step to somehow be involved.
