Enes Kanter's 15% trade kicker

Post#1 » by statsman » Fri Jul 1, 2016 7:45 am

If OKC were to trade Enes Kanter this offseason, what would the result be of his 15% trade kicker?

I did this on the fly, so I could be slight off, but you take the total remaining salaried owed (not including option years) and multiple it by the kicker. Then you take that total amount and divide it by the number of years remaining (again not including option years) and that amount is added to each non-option year.

In the case of Kanter, if I did the math correctly, it would look like this:

2016-17 - $17.1 million to $20.1 million
2017-18 - $17.9 million to $20.9 million
2018-19 - Option year remains unchanged at $18.6 million

In all cases, the bonus/kicker can't take you over the player's max salary. In the case of Kanter right now, this doesn't matter because he won't go over the max amount.

Thanks Smitty, that's what I thought and we weren't sure if the kicker was based on the max for this year or Kanter's contract. I thought it was how you'd calculated it, otherwise its like an extra 5 mil cap hit.

Are you saying that roughly $3 million would he added to each guaranteed season if Kanter were traded this offseason? Sorry, I am trying to be sure I understand what "2016-17 - $17.1 million to $20.1 million" means.

Yes. I think the actual amount is like $2.99 something million. I don't have my sheets with me, or I would look it up.
