Buyout Question

Post#1 » by Curmudgeon » Wed Jul 13, 2016 6:12 pm

An NBA team drafts a European player with the intent of stashing him for a year. The player is currently under contract to European team A and has a buyout clause. The NBA team wants to keep the player in Europe, but wants him to play for European team B, which is in a stronger league and has a better coach. European team B is willing to take the player on a 2 or 3 year deal but will give the player a buyout option following year one of his new deal.

Can the NBA team contribute $650K toward buying the player out of team A, and then contribute another $650K to help buy the player out from team B in the following year?

NBA team's wishes have no bearing on what the player does, if he's not under contract to them. He plays where he wishes, and changes teams as he wishes, and the NBA is not in the mix, until he is working a deal to sign with the NBA team. So i can't imagine that this scenario is ever a thing.

I also think the language specifically says that the buyout money has to be towards the player's NBA deal. I'll have to check it, but I am pretty sure that is how it is termed.

So only one buyout per player? Hmmm......

Hi DBoys
I'd like to clear one specific point :
We can use the case of Yabusele. He's still under contract with Rouen (who must give 60% of the buyout to Roanne, his previous team) so the buyout is set for this contract.
If he was coming to Boston now, Boston would pay the buyout to Rouen.
He will play for a Chinese team this season.
Does the Chinese team pay the buyout or will it be Boston once he's coming in NBA (even if his contact with the French team is finished in this case) ?

When working a deal with him, BOS can contribute to (or perhaps pay in entirety) his buyout from his team at the time.

IOW ...

Team 1
Team 2
Team 3
Team 4
Team (last)
BOS

BOS can help with money to be paid to Team (last) to get him released from his contract so he can sign with BOS.

OK, it's what I was expected but I've had a doubt on this case because it was rumored BOS wanted him to play for Shanghai, which doesn't change anything.
So his buyout of his current french contract will be paid by Shanghai, then BOS will pay the buyout of his Chinese contract.

Thanks DBoys
