I have a question mainly regarding Nikola Mirotic, but any player that also applies.
Nikola Mirotic was a Larry Bird agent signed to a two year contract with the 2nd year being a team option. Because of the team option. the contract is assumed to be a one year deal giving Nikola the right to veto any trade this season. I do understand if traded also, the trading team will lose bird rights on Nikola and Nikola will act as a Non Bird free agent. I also understand the trading team can retain bird rights if the Bulls were to evoke the option before trading Nikola.
My question is do the Bulls have to evoke the option for this to happen. For example purposes, can the Bulls trade Nikola to let's just say New York and then New York is the team that evokes the option. Will NY get full bird rights at that point, or because they traded for Nikola they lose his bird rights immediately and if they evoke the option they will just earn Early Bird rights after his option year..
Hopefully that was clear. I feel like NY would lose his bird rights and them evoking the option will only give them Early Bird rights after next season, but I want to be clear.
