I understand if a team chooses to extend a player's contract using his non-bird rights(1 season), they can up to as much of 120% of the player's previous salary. My question is when a player is playing under the minimum like Dwyane Wade, is it 120% of his actual minimum salary? Or is it 120% of his cap hit(2nd year player's minimum). I assume it would be his actual salary and not his cap hit but need clarification.

They get a cap exemption if they need one to go over the cap and offer up to 120% of his prior salary. The cap hold until signed would be his prior salary ie the minimum.

Note that if a player has non-bird (NQVFA) rights, they can't do an extension. They can perhaps re-sign after he becomes a free agent.

Makes sense. I have one more question. What if the previous salary is pro-rated? Example Derrick Rose. Rose making about 500k this season because of pro-rated minimum. Let's say they want to use non-bird exception this off-season to resign him. Would it be 120% of his pro-rated salary?

To clarify on the earlier, plus the latest, the cap hit for a player who was at or below the minimum would be:
1 if a RFA, it's the QO amount
2 if UFA, it's usually going to be the 2-year veteran minimum (ie unreimbursed salary)
3 if experience is less than 2 year veteran and also UFA (which would be extremely rare), it would be applicable minimum salary

Thank you DBoys, your help is appreciated. I actually feel my question was rather dumb the more I think about it. Don't know why I would I even think it would be 120% of his cap hit, as it is way less money then he actually made. I just wasn't thinking but see it now. Thanks again lol
