Carmelo Anthony contract extension

Post#1 » by zejames » Thu Jun 24, 2010 1:44 pm

Hi All

Great forum here. I've been reading it for a while, it's very interesting ;)

We read here that Carmelo Anthony may sign an extension worth somewhat $65 m very soon. Elsewhere, we read that this extension could be for 3 more years after the end of the current term.

First question : why only 3 years ?

My understanding of the CBA FAQ is that he could go up to 5 years, including remaining seasons on the current contract.

The only way I get to 3 _new_ years on contract is to assume that he is going to use his player option for 2012-12, meaning Anthony will be under current contract until the end of the 2011-12 season. If he signs now, the max 5 years would be the 2 remaining seasons before plus 3 new seasons.

What do you think ?

Second question : I only find one way to get to $65m for the 3 new years.

For 2010-11, it current contracts state a $17,149,244 salary. For 2011-12 (player option), $18,518,575.

a/ If the extensions starts after the 2010-11 season, meaning he won't use his player option, he get :

2011-12 : 18,006,706 (105% of his previous salary, as he gets max salary)
2012-13 : 19,897,410 (10,5% increase)
2013-14 : 21,788,115 (10,5% increase)

In total, that is $59,692,231. Nearly under $60m, but far from $65m

b/ If he uses PO, then contract extension would start from 2012-13 season

2012-13 : 19,444,504 (105%)
2013-14 : 21,486,177 (+10,5%)
2014-15 : 23 742 225 (+10,5%)

That is 64,672,906, near the $65m.

So it seems that the 3 years talked about is this case are from 2012-13 season to 2014-15, and not 2011-12 to 2013-14, as we might have thought.

What do you think ?

Yes. The caveat being that he can't sign it until the end of the moratorium.
