A Question on Contract Extensions

Can a player extend his contract with his team before his contract ends? For example, player X's contract ends in 2012, can he sign a 3-4 year extension in the 2011 off-season? I remember that Garnett extended his contract when he went to the Celtics, but I don't know the details.

Yes they can. But why should a team do it until they have to. If a player gets hurt. THey will get stuck paying a player a ton of money for years while the player rehabs.

Its the truth. Does your boss want to give you money you don't deserve?

No. Do you always unnecessarily interject with negative hypotheticals?

SJSF- lets say that the Hawks don't want to risk the Suns offering Horford a max contract when he hits FA. They could be better off extending his contract this offseason if Horford would take less money in order to have those extra guaranteed years.
