I really don't understand why there is a limit for buying out a player of a foreign contract. I understand why they added a rookie salary scale because the salaries were getting out of hand, but a buyout does not go to the player, it goes to another franchise. There is a $0.5M limit on buyout purposes, yet teams can pay other teams $2M for their picks. When buyouts happen then it is on the player to pay the difference, which puts that player at a disadvantage as compared to other rookies financially.

I want to see the best players get picked, regardless of buyout situations. If a team feels a foreign player is the best player available then they should be able to pick him and then decide whether they want to pay to have him now or wait on him until his contract is over. If they want to pay a $7M fee, then it should be their right.

The only negative I see is that rich teams could take advantage, but the teams picking high where difference makers are usually found aren't the storied franchises for the most part.

They should be able to pay as much as needed.

On the other hand, I personally don't think if an player is already signed to a contract to another team in another league that they should be eligible to be drafted. They shouldn't be able to put their name into the draft until they are ready to come over right then and play, that means having no other contractual agreements that would forbid that.

Buyout money should count against the luxury tax - prorated across the length of the contract signed (or four years for a 1st round pick deal). With that caveat their shouldn't be a limit on buyout money.

... and without a limit for buy-outs those would get out of hand very quickly.
If a team could pay the whole sum why would player care about it?
Hell, bigger buyout = more chance that he would end up with a rich team!

That's another problem: why would NBA want to increase revenues of non-NBA teams with their money?

Which, again, makes a point "if you want to play in NBA, care about your deal/buyout".

Charlotte is a small market team and if Biyombo's buyout situation isn't resolved, they have to ask Biyombo to pay 1.2 million of his buyout out of pocket. That doesn't really help the team.

Maybe because the player is with a non-NBA team
The problem you see is only because you use this POV.
Just take it the other way, and you can say it's a problem for a team to have a player under contact, and leave him go for only 500k.

Don't forget that the player agreed to this contract, and that he could have chosen shorter contract, or contract without buy-out, but also without any clause to get free before the end of this contract.

The team doesn't receive any player in the process, they just loose one of their player sooner than expected.

I think that there should not be a 500k limit, maybe a limit but higher, and that young player have to know what they are doing, and think that if they want to join the NBA one year later, then they don't have to sign a three year contract with huge buy-out after year 1 and year 2 (lower than after year 1).

A interesting point is to be able to enter the draft only in the last year of a contract, but in this case, you have to allow non-NCAA player to enter the draft later than the actual rule, or they should simply sign F.A. contract with NBA teams but any team and the already best team could sign the best player available this year.

That would keep talent away from the league. What's the point?
