Sign & trade player for an exception, Dwight Howard example

IE if the Knicks only have 15 million in cap-space and they sign and trade their 15 million dollar exception for dwight Howard what is the most that Dwight's first year salary can be worth. Does it have to be 15 million at most or is it 125% of 15 million which is 18.75 million

I'm confused. In your scenario, does NY have $15M in cap room or a 15M trade exception? And if it's an exception, how did they get it? By trading away either Amare or Melo?

I figured he was talking about a Trade Exception (non-simultaneous) or cap space. As you know, the answer would be much different if it's simply about how simultaneous trade-matching works.
