Could the Bobcats approach Diop and tell him don't exercise your player option because we will amnesty you (and he surely knows no one will pick him up after that)? To entice him to do so they could agree that they will sign him to a 1 year $2m deal if he agrees not to exercise his player option. Thus, he gets money he wouldn't have gotten otherwise and it saves the Bobcats amnesty ability for someone else (e.g., Maggette or Carroll).

Even if Diop gets amnestied, he would still get paid in full.

So you want to know if it's legal to try to entice Diop to toss away almost $7.5M, by offering him $2M as a reward?

What's in it for him? The privilege of reducing his last paycheck by $5.5M? A better question is, who in the world would go for such an idea, on the last paycheck they'll ever get? I sure wouldn't. Would you?

The real answer to the question posed by Septhaka is that Charlotte has no cake to begin with, and what they do have will probably give you food poisoning.
