Can Boston S&T Green next offseason?

Its been a bit since a Jeff Green thread on here, so here goes.

I haven't seen the actual wording of it in the new CBA, but in discussion about JR Smith Larry Coon said the following:

Larry Coon wrote:But with the new CBA, sign-and-trade deals are no longer allowed once the season starts. Also, the player now has to have finished the MOST RECENT season with the team — so even if Smith goes unsigned for the remainder of the season, the Nuggets can’t sign-and-trade him.

Am I missing something, or does this effectively eliminate any Boston S&T'ing of Green next offseason?

Thanks!

You are correct. The rule says:

A Veteran Free Agent and his Prior Team may enter into a Player Contract pursuant to an agreement between the Prior Team and another Team concerning the signing and subsequent trade of such Contract, but only if (i) the Veteran Free Agent finished the prior Season on his Prior Team’s roster, (ii) ...

Green will not do that.

Okay, completely hypothetical follow up.

Could Boston sign him to a 10 day contract at the season end and thus regain this ability?

Apparently so.

But since he was a RFA and the contract was voided, it appears to me he'll be RFA again this summer as long as the C's extend a QO.

On the other hand, a rest-of-season deal would make him UFA in the summer.

So I'm guessing the Celtics would have no interest in shooting themselves in the foot like that.

It was widely reported that the q/o was rescinded (beyond just the contract being voided). I can post a link later, but as per articles about it he would supposedly be a completely ufa this summer, which would eliminate that consideration.

Okay here's a link to the q/o being rescinded, although it also says that the Celitcs could S&T Green so... :-?

There are several points that should be considered.

Since Green’s qualifying offer was withdrawn, he is currently an unrestricted free agent.

The published reports suggest his qualifying offer was withdrawn in “mid-December.” The exact date is quite significant. If it was withdrawn on or after December 17, the Celtics would have been deemed to have renounced Green in conjunction with the withdrawal. Thus, the team would no longer have his Bird rights.

In either case, Green would not currently be eligible to be signed-and-traded either this season or next.

However, if Green were to hypothetically be signed to a rest-of-season contract with the Celtics this season, two things would happen upon completion of the contract:

First, the Celtics would re-acquire Green’s Bird rights (assuming, of course, they were lost in the first place, which is probably not the case).

Second, he would meet the conditions described by DBoys above, and would thus be eligible to be signed-and-traded next offseason (assuming all other conditions of the provision are met as well). The team would, however, need to be mindful of any potential Base Year Compensation issues in doing so.
