If you Retain a players Caphold . Can you go over the salary cap re-signing him?

For instance

Ian Mahinmi-$855,000 Caphold can Dallas go over the cap re-signing him to $3 Million a year without using any exceptions?

The same Delonte West-$855,000 Caphold is there a limit we can offer ?

Yes, that's what free agent cap holds are all about ...they allow you to retain the "exception" to go over the cap per the rules about veterans resigning with their own team, also known as Bird rules ...as long as you set aside that "cap hold" for those rights, you retain the right to use those rights if you so desire (up to their limit).

Is there a limit you can sign them for?
For example can Dallas

Go over the cap Re-signing West for $5,000,000 or less?
Go over the cap Re-signing Mahinmi for $5,000,000 or less?

It depends on what rights the cap hold is preserving. They can sign them to whatever that exception allows. That's what player rights such as Bird rights are all about ....Coon goes through all the details and how they work in his FAQ.
