Nash was a UFA. He could have signed with anyone that had cap room and then traded to LA correct? So how did Pho get 3M cash plus 4 draft picks? To get Nash to come to a rival did they have to choke 10m in assets so he wouldn't get negative press like LBJ and Dwight? or am I missing something here? I mean Pho had his Bird rights but they weren't utilized in the contract so why we're they involved and why did they get so much for a s&t that could have been done cheaper elsewhere?

You can only S&T a player you had on your roster at the end of last season. So a team like Toronto couldn't sign and trade Nash instantly to the Lakers.

In theory it would be possible for a third team (Toronto was my example above) to sign Nash and trade him to the Lakers on December 15th, but that would miss a month and a half of the season, would tie up the cap of the sign and (wait and then ) trading team, and Nash (and LAL) would have no assurance that the team would have gone through with it. So it couldn't have been done elsewhere.

That said, it looks like a great haul for Phx.

Nash has stated it was important to him that Phoenix get assets in return when he went to another team and in particular that must be the case with him going to the Lakers since Nash specifically requested the Suns owner trade him to the Lakers knowing the owner would not like that but was asking it as a favor so he could be closer to his family.

The Lakers finished 6th this year giving them pick 25 in the 1st and a 50 in the 2nd.

That averages for about 4 37th 2nd round picks.

Not exactly giving away the future for Nash.

I'm sure it makes Nash feel better to get something for the Suns.

So, if a team trades a #1 pick and a 59th pick do you view that as on average 2 30th picks? I really don;t understand that simplification at all.

Also, I'm not sure you should expect the '15 Lakers to finish identical to the '12 Lakers.
