SALARY CAP- BIRD RIGHTS

Post#1 » by Varda » Thu Dec 27, 2012 10:16 pm

Is there a limitation about the BIRD rights?
I dont understand if a team can re-sign just one player or more than one when using the BIRD rights during a season.
and also, if a team can use the LARRY bird, EARLY bird and NON bird to sign 3 players (1 for each) or more in the same season, or maybe it must choose and use just one exception?

The last question is if a team can use more than one exception (i mean not just the birds exceptions) to sign players and exceed the cap in one season?

THANKS!

Hi,
Thanks.
Actually I've already read this but still dont understand.
According to question 26 in the file you've sent, there are some limitation regarding to Disabled Player, Bi-Annual, Mid-Level and trade but what about the BIRD? a team can sign more than one bird for season or only one bird player each season?

The Bird exception is inexhaustible. You can use it on as many players as you have that are eligible.

Thanks.
I'm an MA student for economics and for my thesis that deals with the salary cap, Im looking for credible data about teams payroll in the league from 1983 (before the cap implemented) and until today.

pls, where can i find the data?

I get asked that a lot, and, as far as I can establish, you can't.

Patricia Bender has had a site for years with historical data on team salary info:

While the site was down when I first posted this, it is back up.

You want stuff that's pre-cap? Patricia doesn't have it. She says:

"Where can I find older salary information" is the most often question asked. I do not have older salary information ['85-86 is the first season for which she has any data] and I do not know where you can easily find it. You can try looking in past issues of the Dallas Morning News - David Moore did the salary listings fairly regularly, but I do not know how far back he did it. I also don't have the salaries for 89-90 or 86-87."

My belief is that salaries became available to the public only because there was a cap, and before then you had a few pieces of scattered salary data that got into print here or there occasionally and that's all.

Teams would only make announcements when they signed really big players, otherwise it was usually between the team and the agent/player, so there was little chance of making it out. Also, contracts had not set format, so they wouldn't be in the nice organized data that we have today. For example I remember reading about one contract where it was for 300k or whatever, but the contract said he would be paid 15k a year for 20 years. Or something like 1% of the teams profits. It wasn't until the CBA that contracts were more structured.
