the CBA and Draft night

I'm curious why draft night trades aren't approved by the league offices and are pending till july 1st or maybe the 10th.

It was an infuriating draft night trying to keep up with who is picking where, since the NBA wouldn't send out a memo and we got were twitter reports. For example their were conflicting reports right away on who was sending the first round pick in the Noel deal. As a bucks fan our trade in the second was beyond confusing, because no one knew how we even traded ledo and got Walters.

Basically why is the NBA different from the NFL on draft day trades?

Trades of pick-for-pick are announced and done. The vast majority of trades were completed on Thursday.

As for why there were conflicting reports as to the components of some of the trades, that's on the ones who sent out erroneous info, not the NBA. There's a mad rush to be the first, and some are willing to trade speed for accuracy.

Some trades that include players aren't CBA-legal in June for this reason or that, so they must wait. For example, if a player is being traded into cap space on a team who will have cap space in the new season, but not in June. Or, as in the BOS-BKN deal, they are including a sign-and-trade player, and a free agent signing can't be done until July.

Seasons change over on July 1st, so you're using 2012/13 cap figures for any trades done on 2013 draft night.

To echo this in another way, until you have the new cap you can't know whether you have cap space or not.

Still, I agree with the author. I'm not an expert, but it's beyond ridiculous that nothing about the Boston-Brooklyn deal is official according to the league office. I wish they had a mechanism where they could confirm trades even if these had an execution date set for after the Moratorium.
