Time Warner Cable is allowed to give Howard a show if he resigns with the Lakers provided no additional compensation be paid to Howard.
How is giving Howard a show not additional compensation by the Lakers unless Time Warner Cable offers Howard a show regardless who he signs with? Is access to Time Warner Cable's distribution system a valuable asset? Can anyone put there show on Time Warner Cable distribution system? If TWC doesn’t give show time away, how is it _not_ compensation?

If you accept/assume that TWC would have a show on about the Lakers regardless of if Dwight signs, then it would make sense for them to discuss what the show on the Lakers would be like, and how star players on the Lakers would be featured in the show.
Maybe thats mostly semantics, but I think thats the line that does make it make sense.
Also, it sounds like its not just them.

Re: What am I missing?
That is different than what I thought was being offered. You are saying that TWC has a Laker show and if Howard signs an extension, TWC will feature Howard thereby increasing his star power so he can financially benefit by increased commercial value from 3rd parties.
I do believe this is an end around the salary cap restrictions but it’s not directly as bad as I originally thought. Third party revenue is none of the NBA's business but its salary cap circumvention if a team facilitates the creation of 3rd party opportunities. The fine distinction here is the Lakers are promoting the Lakers, which should be allowed.
