Team and player can mutually modify an existing contract to alter the pay schedule.
Could Rockets add an advances or bouns in Asik/Lin's 2014 contract and pay them 7m before next season to reduce financial consideration in their trading talk?

As I understand it those 2 contracts were back loaded to not allow their former teams to sign them.

The rockets hit against the cap is the average money per year, not how it was structured in the offer sheet.

The former team has to match the offer and the the hit to that team is how it is structured, but the new team's salary hit is the average.


The question I think is could the NYK have restructured the deal to be $9m a year rather than the 5-5-25 had they matched the offer?

Sorry about my poor Engligh, let me explain my question.

The team owns Asik/Lin in 2014-2015 season will cost 8m each in salary cap but pay them 15m actually.
15m is a big money makes Rockets hard to trade Asik/Lin.

So, if Rocket can modify their contracts, add an advance or bouns to pay them 7m in August 2014.
Therefore, when Rockets trade them in October 2014, the next team owns Asik/Lin should only pay them 8m, equal to their cap costs.

Could Rockets do that?

No. Giving that big of an advance in August would not be legal (http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q110). But, more importantly, even if their contracts did call for an advance, a prorated portion of the advance would be owed to the Rockets by any team that trades for them. And such contracts are not allowed to contain bonuses of any kind. Therefore, the best the Rockets can do to offset the large salary increases for Lin and Asik for next season in any potential trade is to send whatever they will have left on their "maximum annual cash limit" at the time of the trade (http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q95).

The answer to ERGOPHOBIAC’s question is no as well. Once a player signs an offer sheet, the ROFR team cannot restructure the deal (unless the offer sheet is first withdrawn, which would require written consent of the ROFR team, the new team, and the player).
